I have been driving for days and days. And days. At least it feels like that. Two and a half days from home to Athens, Ohio, pulling a U-Haul cargo trailer. A day to explore Athens before heading back west again. The trip home has been a bit more leisurely, with Google providing a route with “no highways.” There have been many stops along the way to take photos in the states of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and I’ve now reached Broken Bow, Nebraska. This area is where my maternal grandmother was born and spent most of her childhood.
Today, driving into Broken Bow, serendipitously the song, “May I Suggest” played. The song is by Red Molly, and the following verse stuck with me:
There is a hope
That's been expressed in you
The hope of seven generations, maybe more
And this is the faith
That they invest in you
It's that you'll do one better than was done before
Inside you know
Inside you understand
Inside you know what's yours to finally set right
And I suggest
And I suggest to you
And I suggest this is the best part of your life
The hope of seven generations. No pressure!
At least four of those generations lived and farmed in the area around Broken Bow and Callaway, Nebraska. I didn’t know all of the generations, but I’ll do some exploring in the area tomorrow to learn more. What I do know is that the faith of my mother and grandmother flows through me and has carried me many, many times when my own faith lagged.
I will do one better than was done before. May we all do one better than was done before.
