Most business owners say, “it won’t happen to me” but we all know ransomware attacks are rampant, and businesses around the world are at risk. It is no longer a question of if you’ll be hacked, but when.
According to cyber industry experts, from 2020 to 2021, ransomware attacks increased by 92.7% and the most targeted regions during 2021 were North America (53% of attacks) and Europe (30% of attacks). And still, less than 55% of Businesses train employees for potential cyber-attacks.
No company is immune to cybercrime, and although many companies have programmes and tools in place to try and prevent an attack, it is important to ask yourself what does your company have in place after an attack? What if your back-ups are also corrupted in the attack and you no longer have access to your data to run your company?
The new cyber battlefield poses a real and ever-growing threat to businesses, and although consequences can be severe, most businesses are still unprepared.
You would never go to a construction job and think one tool is all you’ll need. It is the same with cybersecurity, you need multiple tools in your belt to make sure the job it done right and can stand the test of time.
It is the right balance of technology, culture, and habits that creates a well-rounded approach to cybersecurity.
Cyber security products on their own are not enough to keep a company safe. Making sure you have a Cybersecurity Incident Response Plan in place is crucial to combat the effects of a cyberattack. If there is a point of failure with your other “tools”, you will be prepared for a quick recovery, meaning less downtime, which means a company will see a reduction in lost income due to an attack.
To help prevent chaos and save time and money during a Ransomware attack, make sure you take the time to:
- Identify your company’s data risks: Your company’s most valuable assets.
- Identify your existing Controls Systems & Security protocols: What systems/protocols are in place to protect your company’s assets?
- Create a cybersecurity culture in the workplace: What steps have you taken to train your team on cyber hygiene and good practices?
- Establish a cybersecurity incident response plan: Do you have a plan in place for after an attack?
