Landsat Reveals Reservoir Changes and Bathymetry

In two recent studies, researchers used Landsat data to fill key gaps in our knowledge of reservoir structure and dynamics. Together, the work provides water and land managers with unprecedented tools for resource management across the globe.

Climate change will increase forest disturbances in Europe throughout the 21st century

Wildfires, storms, and bark beetle outbreaks are all growing more frequent in our changing climate, impacting forests around the globe. Grünig et al., a study published in March in Science, projects how forest disturbance regimes and tree mortality will shift across Europe throughout the 21st century. The researchers investigated three disturbance agents—wildfires, bark beetles, and windstorms—under three climate scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5). They used 34 years of annual forest disturbance rates from Landsat to train climate-sensitive disturbance models, establishing the historical baseline with which to model future projections. The study's simulation framework, called Scaling Vegetation Dynamics (SVD), combined these Landsat-based models with a deep neural network trained on 135 million data points from local forest models to project vegetation change at 100-meter resolution across ~187 million hectares of forest in Europe. They found that European forests face increasing disturbances in coming decades under all climate scenarios. Under unabated warming (RCP8.5), the estimated disturbed area would more than double by the end of the century. These rising disturbance rates are predicted to significantly increase the proportion of young forests while reducing old-growth forests, with major implications for carbon storage and biodiversity across Europe.

Back-to-back subtropical cyclones in March fueled destructive flash flooding on several of the Hawaiian Islands.

A Fault Line in Full Bloom


Plains around the San Andreas Fault and across Carrizo Plain National Monument are awash with yellow as wildflowers bloom.

Wildflower blooms appear as yellow patches at the center of satellite images centered on Carrizo Plain National Monument. The blooms spread and intensify between March 5 and March 13.

Cañon Fiord's Whirling Waters


During the 2022 summer melt season, sediment plumes and fractured sea ice traced swirling eddies in a branch of the Nansen Sound fjord system in the Canadian Arctic.

A V-shaped fjord cuts through barren brown land, with one patch of swirling water marked by white sea ice and another one colored turquoise by suspended sediment. Glacial ice flows into the fjord in several places.

Activity at the volcano in the Philippines sent lava and pyroclastic flows down the volcano’s flanks and prompted evacuations in nearby communities.

The heat signature from an eruption at Kilauea glows yellow and orange in the volcano’s summit crater.

Upcoming Virtual Workshop | May 12-13


NASA's Satellite Needs Working Group Implementation Team (NSITE) is hosting a free virtual workshop about the Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 Dataset (HLS). The two-day virtual event features an introduction to the dataset, tutorials on how to access and use HLS data, example applications of HLS, and a platform for attendees to ask questions.

Face-to-Face Meeting | March 18-19


The Spring 2026 HLS Face-to-Face working group meeting was the largest in-person gathering to date, convening NASA (Goddard, Marshall, JPL) USGS, ESA, USDA, and academic partners. HLS was confirmed as NASA's most-distributed data product, with 5.6 billion files distributed and nearly 40 petabytes accessed over four years. Key discussion themes included HLS v3 readiness, algorithm maturity, low latency development, and operational product strategy.
