Special Announcement!

Revised Criteria for the Youth and Family Peer Advocate Provisional Credentials

Greetings! As interest in peer support services increases statewide, we strive to support and protect the fidelity of the family and youth peer advocate credentials. Families Together in NYS, Inc. is pleased to share news of an ongoing restructuring of the Family and Youth training and credential programs funded by the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYSOMH).

This hard-won opportunity for a career pathway recognizes the value of peer support to engage, support, and empower youth and families. Since their inception, the Family and Youth Peer Advocate Credentials are only required for those that are employed and working in an NYSOMH licensed, designated or funded program providing Medicaid reimbursable services of family peer support or youth peer support.

The first phase of this restructuring is designed to support more efficient processing of applicants employed in these programs. Provisional (temporary) Credential applications will only be processed from candidates currently employed in NYSOMH licensed, designated or funded programs providing Medicaid reimbursable services of family peer support or youth peer support or other state approved programs moving forward. The current application processing system will be closed for upgrades to align with these new criteria and will reopen on February 9, 2026. At that time, applications can be submitted meeting the new requirements and using updated application forms. Future updates may include additional information for verification of qualifications and readiness as a professionally credentialed peer worker.

We remain committed to supporting the statewide family and youth peer workforce through job readiness and quality provision of peer support services. The self-paced, online training modules hosted by our partners at the Community Technical Assistance Center (CTAC) will remain publicly available to allow a broader audience to access free training and explore the family and youth peer support profession. We continue to encourage supervisors and program management to also access our public training to support family and youth peer advocates. Due to system upgrades, access to the training modules will reopen on February 2, 2026.

Stay connected for more information about this restructuring process. In the meantime, check out our ongoing technical assistance events for Family and Youth Peer Advocates and Supervisors throughout New York State. Thank you for your continued support.

Important: Additional detailed instructions will be emailed directly to all applicants in the next couple of weeks for those who currently have pending applications in our system.

Reminder: CTAC Self-Learning System Upgrades December 17th - February 2nd

The Self-Learning Center is undergoing an upgrade and will open on Monday, February 2nd.  Learners cannot access training modules during this time.

Please note that these upgrades do not impact any webinars, toolkits, or other resources accessible via McSilverTA.org

Don't miss out! An increase in email security settings across technology platforms may result in you missing important FTNYS communications.

We recommend peers and agencies add FTNYS as a 'safe sender' and routinely check spam/junk folders, especially when anticipating reply emails from us. Security settings differ by agency and may require supervisors to work with their IT staff to resolve.
