NEWSLETTER    APRIL, 2013

WELCOME TO THE APRIL EDITION OF OUR NEWSLETTER
Spring has sprung and thoughts turn to writing and shooting great screenplays.

Lots of activities have occurred lately in the Boston area, most notably the Massachusetts Production Coalition Expo which was held on Saturday, March 23rd.

Below, new HSSW member, Melissa Moriarty discusses her reaction, after volunteering there. And Emerson Screenwriting Certificate student/actor/producer, Andy Jasmin shares his thoughts on the significance of the event.

I have included a link here to an article from the UK's Guardian paper, courtesy of another new member, Clark Carroll.  Written by TV dramatist, John Yorke, it briefly and eloquently outlines the fundamentals of writing a great screenplay.

Finally, be sure to check out the details of the MA Production Coalition panel on screenwriting, coming in mid-April, and the Women in Film and Video NE script competition.

Enjoy all of our updates below and please come out to support the rest of our script review season.

FEBRUARY WORKSHOP, AN OCCASION FOR HILARITY AND INSIGHT
Creating Your Own Shorts    Making It Local

On February 18th Harvard Square Script Writers hosted three representatives from public access TV stations as a way to introduce members to free production resources in their local towns .

In every community in the United States, as mandated by federal law, there are such studios available for citizen use, at nominal cost.

Nancy Lynne Albertson trains her camera on the HSSW improv group.

Wellesley TV Director, James Joyce explained the history of this program and Nancy Lynne Albertson, from BATV (Billerica) and Janice Williams from BNN (Boston) described the facilities, equipment, and workshops available at their locations.  High definition cameras and training with Final Cut Pro editing software were two of the common tools available to members interested in their use.

To inspire writers who also want to produce, there was a screening of the award-winning comic short, Senior Speed Dating, developed by the improv team, the Naughty Nanas and shot, directed, and edited by Ms. Albertson, with public access equipment.  Nanas, Amy Rubin and Joan Larason described the process of developing a loose script in which seniors with various personal, or age-related issues

attempt to navigate the world of the 8 minute date.

The  screening was followed by a few exercises in which HSSW members were asked to improv their own story as it was spontaneously shot by Ms. Albertson.  Although no Oscars or Emmys are likely to be in the offing, members did gain insight into the importance of clearly delineating scenes and actions within them

ASPIRING FILM-MAKERS REFLECT ON THE MASSACHUSETTS PRODUCTION COALITION EXPO

MELISSA MORIARTY

Over the weekend I volunteered at the Massachusetts Media Expo sponsored by the Massachusetts Production Coalition which hosted New England film and media companies and featured guest speakers. As I bounced from registering attendants in the lobby to catching a seminar on the do's and dont's that casting directors look for in aspiring actors, I began to ask myself "Why is the movie industry still exclusively contained to Hollywood?"  With about 600 attendees present and about 40 exhibitors showcasing their media services to them, the WBGH headquarters, where the event was held, felt like the appropriate venue to mark their first media conference. More importantly, it highlighted Boston's clear demand for and from filmmakers who plan to remain local.

MelissaM Since I delved into film-making about two years ago, I noticed that most workshops or conferences that I attended tended to allude to Hollywood as the end goal for those who can shine in the industry, leaving the implied conclusion that for the rest of us it's an unattainable mirage. For me, the Massachusetts Media Expo showcased the talents of the enthusiastic animators, film academics, actors, technical crew, producers and filmmakers who hone their craft right here in New England. It is my hope that with more major networking events like this in Boston, we can soon start to be considered part of "the industry."

Melissa Moriarty currently works as a Program Associate at Management Sciences for Health.  She begins her MFA in film production at Boston University in the fall.  She has produced two 48 Hour films, both with an all-female crew.

ANDY JASMIN

The MA MEDIA EXPO was the best networking event for the business of film that I've been to in New England. The best part of the event, for me, was the Keynote Speakers; everyone was amazing but to hear Dorothy Aufiero (Producer: The Fighter) and Mark Kamine (Silver Linings Playbook, Ted, Shutter Island) talking about the passion that they have for New England and the Greater Boston Area, inspired me to keep writing stories that are specific to our region.

As an aspiring filmmaker, I found that the MA MEDIA EXPO allowed me to see how possible it is to develop a production team and create content locally that can reach an international audience! I am already preparing for next year's conference.

Andy Jasmin is an actor and producer of independent content, the founder of Dreamworld, his own production company, and a student in Emerson College's  Screenwriting Certificate program.  Andy recently appeared in the indie film, Noah which imagines a United States in which slavery has never been abolished.  Take a look at the astonishingly terrifying trailer.

MAY 5TH WORKSHOP  PITCHING IT  WITH MARILYN ATLAS

Marilyn Atlas
The sign-up deadline for this workshop has been extended to April 15th. It will be opened up to other groups, including AFTRA/SAG, the Emerson Screenwriting Certificate students, MA Production Coailtion members, and Women in Film and Video, NE.

Your script is finally ready for primetime.  And now you need to get out there and convince production companies to take a serious look at your work. It all starts with the pitch. Learn how to grab your audience's attention from the moment you walk through the door, and how to keep it there. We'll be discussing good pitches versus bad pitches, and how to strengthen that logline of your's into a recipe for success. We will also discuss examples of successful TV and feature film loglines, and examine how they took producers from not only being interested in the project, but also invested. We will also look at how much the industry has changed, and how to best adapt to the current state of the marketplace. There also will be time for audience members to practice their pitches and receive feedback from Ms Atlas.

Workshop $50.00.  Sunday, May 5th, 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., 117 West Newton Street, Boston, MA.  Please note that 3 registrants have signed up.  Limited to 15 participants.

To sign-up, just write to Genine Tillotson at genine@hsswriters.com or call 978 505-5652.
