From the Minister

Dear Unity Family,

I’m still thinking about the recent passing of Chadwick Boseman who made his transition in August at age 43. Maybe you are too? He was so young. And such a gifted actor.

For many, Chadwick Boseman will be remembered in the iconic role of T’Challa (and rightly), or as James Brown, or Thurgood Marshall. For me, I will always admire his breakthrough performance as Jackie Robinson in the film
“42” - The True Story of An American Legend.
This biopic tells the real-life story of how Branch Rickey, renowned general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, defied baseball’s race barrier by signing the first Black player to the team… Jackie Robinson. That was in 1946.

History shows that it was Robinson’s true courage and amazing talent that helped change the course of baseball. It’s also what ultimately silenced the critics!

As we continue our commitment to dismantle racism in our nation, I am struck by several lines of dialogue from the film.

Branch Rickey: Ya think God likes baseball, Herb?
Herb Pennock: What- What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Branch Rickey: It means someday you're gonna meet God and when he inquires as to why you didn't take the field against Robinson in Philadelphia and you answer that it's because he was a Negro, it may not be a sufficient reply!

But this is my favorite.

Branch Rickey: We had a victory over fascism in Germany. It's time, time we had a victory over racism at home.

And so, let us join together in saying, "Amen to that!"
There is much for which to be hopeful. We are the ones.

In Love and Unity,
Rev. Anne Tabor

“Take My Advice, I'm Not Using It”
Sunday, October 25, 2020
11am CT, Rev. Kelly Isola, Guest Speaker
*Facebook Live

How many times have you thought, or even said, “Here, do it this way...” or something similar. Have you ever given well-meaning, heartfelt suggestions only to discover that perhaps you could be using a little of what you're offering for yourself? “Take My Advice, I’m Not Using It” becomes a perfect little catch phrase to remind ourselves to stay present to what is, the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s also a wonderful tool for checking in with ourselves in order to practice a little gentleness and self-compassion.

About Kelly:
Reverend Kelly Isola is an innovation alchemist, and passionate about supporting people and organizations to live and love more authentically by sharing her passion for living the two-fold path of an engaged spiritual life – embracing the inner path of wisdom, as well as demonstrating the outer path of compassionate service. She is passionate about interfaith and interspiritual work as an avenue for individual and collective healing and peace. As an ordained Unity minister, Kelly also loves sharing her wisdom in the classroom through her own classes, and as faculty for two seminaries. Kelly is an avid blogger on her own site, guest blogs, writes for Unity Magazine, various Unity booklets, and a number of online magazines. Read more about Kelly at www.kellyisola.com.

Treasurer's Report as of 9/30/2020

Gross Revenue         $161,758.80
Net Income           $-488.15

Unity of Arlington recently applied for and received a PPP loan from the government stimulus program in the amount of $19,900. At this time it is still considered a loan from the government. If we are able to get loan forgiveness, which we are fully expecting to accomplish, then it will no longer be considered a loan but a gift that does not need to be repaid. We will keep you posted as to the current status of these funds.

Early Voting Starts
NEXT Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Early voting in the state of Texas for the general election on November 3 runs from October 13-30, 2020.

For information on early voting click HERE.

Make a plan to vote. Here are some suggestions. Decide what day you will go, how you will get there, if you are going to go with someone. Don't make other appointments or plans for that day as you don't know how long the voting lines will be. Keep all protocols for being in public during the pandemic in mind (socially distance the whole time, wear a face mask, take hand sanitizer, etc.). Plan on wearing comfortable shoes as you may be standing for a while. Individuals who have trouble standing for more than a few minutes may want to consider taking a small portable chair. Check on the weather report; do you need an umbrella? Take a bottle of water to stay hydrated, especially if the weather is warm. You may want to pack a light snack. You do not want anything to interfere with your voting. Be sure to remember your ID; Texas driver licenses or personal identification cards issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) are preferred although other types of ID are acceptable (refer to link above).

The Texas Tribune website has a field where you can enter your address and it will personalize the information specifically for you. Click HERE to access the site.
A Reminder of Ways to Help Protect Yourself and Others

Covid-19 is still here. In fact, recent numbers around the DFW metro area have shown increases. One reason for this may be that people are becoming a little lax about following all of the safe practices and basic prevention steps as described by scientific organizations. The mask mandate remains in effect for Texas. This is not the time to fall back on safety; it's time to recommit to making sure you and your family are safe. Once again, here are the guidelines. Please review them:

  • Wear a mask, and wear it properly, with both nose and mouth covered..
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Protect coughs by coughing and sneezing into your elbow and/or a tissue.
  • Frequently clean surfaces that are often touched, especially doorknobs, door frames, telephones, keyboards, and bathroom areas.
  • Use hand sanitizer.
  • Stay home if you are not feeling well.

Anne, offers spiritual counseling to individuals seeking a deeper under-standing of themselves and their divine power within to solve life's challenges. Spiritual counseling can help if there is a need for inspiration, crisis support, or healing in any area of your life. Prayer and meditation are an integral part of Unity's spiritual principles, and an essential practice in realizing the answers we seek. We believe in the transformative power of affirmative prayer. You are a unique expression of God. Spiritual counseling will remind you of that!

UNITY'S FIVE BASIC PRINCIPLES

Principle #1:
There is only one Presence and one Power in the Universe and in my life, God the Good.

Principle #2:
Human beings have a spark of divinity within them, the Christ spirit within.
Their essence is of God, and therefore they are also inherently good.

Principle #3:
Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking.
Everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thought.

Principle #4:
Prayer is creative thinking that heightens the connection with God Mind and therefore brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity, and everything good.

Principle #5:
Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, are not enough.
A person must live the truth he or she knows.
CORE VALUES
Spirit-Led:
Centered in the awareness of God's presence, we turn within for divine guidance in
all we do.

Love:
Love is our True Nature. We express the harmonizing power of love to see good everywhere and in everybody. Love binds together the whole human family.

Diversity:
We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. In a spirit of Unity, we embrace each person as an expression of God grounded in truth and love.

Connection:
We live, love, and laugh from our Oneness with God. We honor our inter-connectedness with each other, with all life, and the earth.

Abundance:
God is our Infinite Source of Good. We gratefully demonstrate prosperity in all areas
of our lives. We wisely use our wealth of resources to serve our spiritual community and the world.

Service:
We cultivate enlightened leadership by practicing the teachings of Jesus the Christ through sacred service. It is a blessing to serve locally and globally.

Integrity:
We consciously choose to practice living our Core Values and Unity Principles rather than simply professing them. We choose to communicate from the heart with authenticity and deliver on our commitments with reliability.
