Headmaster Update
John Thornburg
Headmaster
Dear Parents,

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we have successfully navigated our way to the midpoint of the first quarter. Malden Catholic is in full swing and we are delighted to announce that two of our JV teams won their first games, our students have been enthusiastically signing up for clubs, our Leadership Program is underway and we will be hosting a virtual Mass tonight in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

Our Saint Francis Xavier Society also celebrated the 23rd Annual SFX Celebration last Thursday evening. We were not able to meet in person, but in our own creative way we thanked our special donors and illustrated the benefits of a Malden Catholic education shared from the perspective of two of our students and a special alumni, Josh Ouellette ’14. Josh’s heart-felt story was one of many trials. Although he had a loving family, they were often challenged financially and had trouble providing for basic needs. Malden Catholic gave Josh with the foundation he needed to ultimately land a full scholarship to Boston College and then an outstanding career at Goldman Sachs. If you have not heard Josh’s story, it is one that should not be missed. I have attached the link to the SFX video.

I would also like to extend my personal congratulations to our Plus Ultra Award Honoree, Mason Tenaglia ‘74. Mason outstanding contribution of over $1 million in lifetime giving has impacted every person at our school in immeasurable ways. The Florence Tenaglia Scholarship Fund was given in memory of his beloved mother to first-generation in-coming students in need who demonstrate the exceptional traits of hard work, determination, motivation and the desire to give back to the community. We greatly appreciate Mason's outstanding commitment to our school!

I am so grateful for every family in our community. Thank you for everything you have done to help us keep our school open and thriving!

Thank you for your support,

John K. Thornburg

Reminders from Principal Redman
October is the Respect for Life month and also the month of the Rosary. Campus Ministry will be offering times next week for students, faculty, and staff to come together to pray the Rosary.

Admissions Assistance
Calling all MC parents who LOVE talking about our school! Parents are needed to make calls for Admissions this Fall. If you are interested in helping our Admissions office – please email Mr. O’Neil at [email protected].

Senior Portraits
Seniors must use the following link to sign up to have their portrait taken at MC. More specific details about how to dress for these pictures will be sent after sign-ups take place. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D49ADAC2AA4F8C61-senior

Reminders
Starting Monday, we are going to ask students to have their school ID in-hand as well as their phone with their safety app. Once students have shown us their safety pass, they will swipe their MC ID for attendance. We have this technology in place to make attendance easier beginning next week.

During the month of October, our Fifth Day rotation happens on days other than Wednesday. Students should be mindful of which day of the week is virtual, as well as changes to their cohort days. Every Sunday we will give you the update via email. The calendar on the school’s website is also updated for the rest of the semester.

Remote students are reminded to sign in to class on time. Some students are joining classes late.

Emails are definitely the best way to stay in contact with Faculty, Staff, and Administrators. Please note that it is our policy to make sure we answer emails within a 24 hour period.

The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
Tonight, October 5th, Malden Catholic will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with a virtual Mass at 6:30 PM. At the end of the Liturgy, pets will receive a special blessing from our celebrant, Father Michael Della Penna, OFM.

St. Francis of Assisi is the Roman Catholic Church's patron saint of animals. He abandoned a life of luxury after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and to live in poverty. St. Francis is remembered for the miracles that people say God performed through him and for his compassion for the vulnerable, especially poor people, sick people and animals. Francis saw animals as his brothers and sisters and prayed that God would work through him to help them. Francis began preaching to them about the ways that God had blessed them.

FAFSA Night Webinar
This Thursday night we will host a FAFSA webinar for both Seniors students and parents at 6:30 PM. In this webinar, our featured guest speaker and facilitator, Patricia Reilly, the Associate Dean of Financial Aid at Tufts, will provide a line-by-line detailed discussion of the FAFSA application.
