The curators set their alarms this morning for 4:30 a.m. PST to avoid this being the 1948 Chicago Tribune “Dewey Beats Truman” edition of Revitalize. So as this issue hit the email we guess that the election will decided over the next 24-hours, or not. Once we know the winner, we will have a special post election edition on the pundits, prophets and our guesses as to the winner's strategy on combatting Covid-19 and reshaping or dismantling the health and long-term care systems.
Now let us first look at the data and the continued growth in U.S. and worldwide cases as well as more on the lockdown of Europe. Data provided for Nov. 2, 2020 by Worldometer shows for the most part that across the U.S. and Europe daily Covid-19 cases and deaths continue to increase, please see the daily graph at that site.] Tragically in the U.S., pediatric cases are increasing; we link to CNN for more information.
On Nov. 2, 2020 in the U.S., there were 88,905 new cases, an increase of approximate 20,000 new cases from the prior week, there are 9,567,543 total cases): on the 2nd there were 522 deaths (a week ago on that day there was 529 deaths) and the death total has reached 236,997. In comparison, in Italy – now 12th in the number of cases – there were 22,253 new cases (an approximate 5K increase in prior week in “day of reported cases”), 731,588 total cases, and 233 deaths, almost double from prior week that was double the week before (39,059 total deaths); in France, 52,518 new cases , double last week which was an 80 percent increase from prior week (1,466,433 total cases) and 416 deaths once again almost double prior week and there have been a total of 52,518 deaths; in Germany – now 15th in the number of cases – where yesterday’s new cases increased 25 percent over prior and deaths increased by 300 percent over data reported here last week, there are 16,240 new cases (560,596 total cases) and 112 deaths (10,734 total deaths) – the United Kingdom had 18,950 new cases (an approximate 10% decrease since last week) and 1,053864 total cases, 136 deaths, an approximate 30 percent increase since last week) increasing their Covid death total to 46,853. We continue to look to the second and third place countries, after the U.S., for total cases and deaths, India and Brazil, respectively. India, with a total population of 1.38 billion, had approximately the same number of new cases and deaths as last week with 37,592 new cases (8,266,914 total cases) and 522 new deaths (236,997 total deaths); and Brazil had 2, 8,501 new cases and 168 new deaths (5,554,206 total cases) and (160,272 total deaths), both new cases and deaths decrease by almost half in Brazil.Our neighbor to north Canada, is now 31st in worldwide total cases and had 3,422 new cases and 29 new deaths (this was an approximate 20 percent decrease in new cases and increase of two in deaths) for a total of 240,263 cases and 10,208 deaths.
We turn to the NY Times and their great reporting on the states now being hit hardest, please follow the link to "How are Americans catching the virus?" Increasingly, ‘They have no idea." CNN online caught the curators attention and sense of fear in its reporting on pediatric cases in "Cases of Covid-19 in children on rise, with highest 1-week spike yet." Italy's return to lock down and the political, economic, and cultural ramifications is found in the NY Times' article "In Italy, like everywhere the virus goes, it’s the discontent that’s contagious."
