Data provided on Oct. 13 by Worldometers shows a spike in cases across the U.S. and Europe; please see the daily graph at that site. The data below illustrates that in comparison to what we reported in the Oct. 7 issue there was the greatest daily increase in new cases and deaths in Germany, almost as large an increase in the UK, and a doubling in cases and deaths in Italy and and a one-third increase in France.
Because of what is often daily spiking and occasional decline in cases and deaths, for this issue for the U.S. we report on both Oct. 12 and Oct. 13, 2020. On Oct. 12, in the U.S., there were 45,791 new cases, on Oct. 13, there were 51,534 new cases (8,090,253 total cases): on the 12th, there were 316 deaths and on the 13th, 843 deaths, (that number of deaths is double the daily deaths reported in last week’s newsletter) and the death total has reached 220,873. In comparison, on Oct. 12 in Italy, there were 4,619 new cases (a doubling from the prior week in “day of reported cases” and 359,569 total cases) and 39 deaths (36,205 total); in France, 8,505 new cases (32,779 total cases) and 96 deaths (32,799 total); in Germany – 4,809 new cases (331,094 total cases) and 19 deaths (9,721 total deaths); in the UK, 13,972 new cases (an approximate 10 percent increase since last week) and 617,789 total cases, 50 deaths (almost five-times the number of deaths reported a week ago), increasing their Covid-19 death total to 42,875. New this week: To fill out the global picture of the pandemic, we look to the second and third place countries for total cases and deaths, after the U.S., India and Brazil, respectively. India, which moved into second place last month after the government halted its lockdown that economically devastated the country of 1.38 billion, had 54,265 new cases (7,173,565 total cases) and 710 new deaths (109,894 total deaths); and in Brazil 8,429 new cases (5,103,408 total cases) and 203 new deaths (150,709).

The Doctors offer us two brief and enlightening comparisons of Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. versus 18 other developed countries.
In our final section, we link you to publisher-journalist-entrepreneur Steve Coll’s recent essay in The New Yorker’s daily newsletter, “Donald Trump’s consistent unreliability on COVID, and everything else.” In a comparing what most of America is doing and what the White House is not; Coll cites the opinion poll (from National Geographic and Morning Consult) that inform us that "three-quarters of Americans say that they wear a mask every time they leave home, a figure that has risen by nearly 25 percent since July." Coll then offers that "According to a late-summer survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, six in 10 people think that the worst of the pandemic is yet to come.” Please read this essay that argues clearly and succinctly that tens of thousands died needlessly.
