PROJECT UPDATE

VDOT is continuing with right of way acquisitions. Most of the total takes have been acquired,

with partial take acquisitions, including some building takes, scheduled to begin this summer. VDOT will be contracting this spring for the demolition of vacated structures.

PROJECT IMPROVEMENTS

Based on community feedback, VDOT and the project team are in the process of making modifications to the design to minimize impacts. These improvements will include:

• Making the new sidewalks in the corridor more walkable by removing turn lanes where feasible to reduce the pedestrian crossing distances.
• Incorporating crosswalks at all legs of all signalized intersections within the project.
• Reducing impacts to adjacent properties, while also reducing the overall project cost, by narrowing the roadway width at the proposed bridges and bringing the travel lanes closer together.
• Improving pedestrian and bicycle access with the addition of plaza areas which will provide space for local bus stop shelters and future transportation amenities.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project will improve approximately three miles of Richmond Highway from Jeff Todd Way to Napper Road in Fairfax County. The proposed plan will widen the road from four to six lanes, provide separate cycle tracks and ADA accessible sidewalks on both sides of the road, and reserve the median width necessary to accommodate Fairfax County's future Bus Rapid Transit plans for dedicated bus-only lanes.
