Devotion: Be Content with What You Have

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."

Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

As a teenager, one of my favorite pastimes was visiting a local hobby shop to play trading card games with my friends. Every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM, we would gather to participate in card tournaments, sharing in camaraderie and fun. The gentleman who ran the shop had a profound love for all things nerdy, from trading cards and comic books to sci-fi movies. For a young man who found these same things fascinating, it was refreshing to see an adult who enjoyed them as well.

Unfortunately, as I transitioned out of my teenage years, the hobby shop closed down. The place where my friends and I congregated every weekend was gone, leaving only memories of a kind man who shared our love for nerdy hobbies. I cherished the tournaments and the relationships we had built at that shop. After it closed, I thought I would never have such a place to be with my friends again.

About five years later, I unexpectedly ran into the man from the card shop. He shared with me how our presence in his store had left a great impact on his life. He described us as “respectful young men” who “remained content even when things didn’t go our way.” This encounter reminded me of the profound message in Hebrews 13:5, urging us to be content with what we have, for God has promised never to leave or forsake us.

The Bible calls us to be thankful for and content with everything we have. Our families, health, meals we can share with loved ones, and life itself—these are all precious gifts from the Lord. Yet, discontent, greed, or fears can prevent us from fully appreciating and treasuring these gifts. We don’t know what the future holds. There may be times when our social settings or comforts are taken away, or we may face even greater challenges. However, as children of God, we are assured of His continuous love and care. The Lord Himself is our helper in this perilous life.

Prayer:

Father in heaven, thank You for being our reliable helper and protector. Teach us to be content with what we have and to recognize the abundant blessings You have given us. Fill our hearts with thanksgiving, even in difficult times. Through Jesus, Your Son, we pray. Amen.

Thoughtful Questions:

  1. Reflect on a time when you felt content despite a challenging situation. What helped you to feel that way?
  2. How can you remind yourself of God's promise to never leave you or forsake you in your daily life?
  3. What are some practical ways you can cultivate a heart of contentment and gratitude for the blessings you have?
  4. In what areas of your life do you struggle with discontentment or greed, and how can you address these feelings with faith?

Live by faith, be known by love, and serve as a voice of hope for others.

Calling all children for this year's Children's Nativity! "An Unexpected Christmas"

Performances will take place December 22 at both the 9:30 and 11:00am services. Children may be assigned to perform for one or both of the services depending on numbers.

There are 3 mandatory rehearsals for K-5th-grade participants. Each will be held at the church following the 11:00am services on December 1, December 8 and December 15. Rehearsals will end close to 1:00pm. It is possible we will need to extend one or more of these rehearsals with advanced notice based on how they are going.

Pre-K kids will rehearse their parts in their regular Sunday morning classes and will need to be present for the December 15 rehearsal.

Afton Pownall, who leads music education at Britt David Magnet Academy, will once again be directing this year's production. We will assign parts at the first rehearsal on December 1.

Angel Breakfast 2024

Imagine the angels singing in heaven, celebrating God's great plan to send Jesus to redeem us. Imagine what the shepherds felt when angels appeared in an instant above them bringing the good news of Jesus' birth!

Come and celebrate with the angels! Our Li'l RidgeRunner Angel Breakfast will take place on Saturday, December 7th at 9:00am! We will make a craft, eat a delicious breakfast, and share the Christmas story along with a special ornament for each child. Each child is encouraged to bring a special guest (parent, grandparent, mentor, etc.)

Let's take the opportunity to slow down and teach our little ones the true meaning of Christmas! The Angel Breakfast is open to 3-year-olds through children in first grade. Register HERE!

Did you know that you can earmark your state tax dollars for

The Methodist Home?

Rev. Lynn Meadows-White was our guest preacher a few weeks ago and she shared with us the unique potential the Foster Child Organization Credit offers to support students at the Methodist Home. If you have to pay state income taxes, why not earmark them for The Methodist Home? Thanks to the Foster Child Organization Credit, your tax dollars can now bring new hope for older youth in foster care who are served by The Methodist Home. As a taxpayer of the state of Georgia, you can redirect your state income taxes to The Methodist Home and help youth transitioning out of the foster care system toward adulthood and independence. When you participate, you receive a 100% tax credit on your state income tax bill for your donation --- which means that this way of contributing to The Methodist Home is ultimately not costing you any additional money (beyond what you would already have to pay in state income taxes).

For more information about how to apply, click here.

November Themes

Elementary: Self-Control

Pre-K: A Voice in the Night (Prayer)

Hey Parents!

This November in Elementary RidgeRunners, we are learning how God wants us to be self-controlled, listening first and not letting anger get the best of us, based on James 1:19.

Our Li'l RidgeRunners theme is "A Voice in the Night". We are learning how to start our day by praying to God and talk and listen to Him all day long. Through the story of Samuel, kids will learn that God is always ready to talk with us.

Children's Rooms

Check-in for all ages will be at the kiosks just inside the RidgeRunners entrance doors.

Elementary RidgeRunners (K-5th) enter to the right of the check-in area. Li'l RidgeRunners (Infant-Pre-K5) head down the hallway past the Elementary room to the left. Toddlers are straight ahead. Take a right turn for Pre-K and a left turn for Infants. Infants and Toddlers will share the Toddler Room for the 9:30 service.

How check-in works:

  1. Accept your invite and sign up for Realm Connect. (If you have not received an invite to Realm, please email clay@theridgecolumbus.com and request to be added.)
  2. Request to join the appropriate groups for your kids within the Connect app (ex. 2nd grade, toddlers, etc.).
  3. Sign in via the app on your way to church on Sunday, and use the QR code to print your name tags when you arrive.
  4. Alternately, sign in and print name tags at one of several laptop or tablet kiosks when you arrive. You will see the RidgeRunners logo on the doors to the check-in station.
  5. Escort your kids to their rooms by following the signage and moving through the children's area hallways in a counter-clockwise direction.
  6. Pick up kids after the service by entering and exiting the hallways in the same counter-clockwise fashion. When picking up kids from the Elementary RidgeRunners room, please proceed all the way into the room from the check-in area and exit through either the door to the back hallway or through the doors to the parking lot. Please avoid heading back through the check-in area so that we can avoid over-crowding in the front hallway.

Car Talk:

*When you're in an intense moment with someone, what can you do to think clearly? (Take a step back and think and pray).

*When you're frustrated and you act on it, what usually happens? (Something bad that you didn't mean to happen. It makes God sad because it might hurt you and others.)

*Words are powerful and God wants us to be careful how we use them so we don't hurt others or hurt our friendships (James 3:1-12). What are things you say that hurt? What are ways you say things that can hurt? What are things you can say that can build up?

Memory Verse:

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak,

and slow to become angry." - James 1:19
