Right to Education Project's June Newsletter

Welcome to the Right to Education Project (REP) Community Newsletter! We are Legal Aid of NC’s statewide education justice project. We use this newsletter to share information about upcoming events and resources for parents and families, as well as tips on how to help your student feel successful and safe in school.

Resource Spotlight

We are excited to highlight sections of our website!

Within this resource, check out our chart with each North Carolina County/school district's policy manuals, with specific links to each district's bullying policy, discrimination policy, and sexual harassment policy. These policy manuals have the rules that schools have to follow! Understanding these policies will help you better advocate for your child in your specific district.

This month we would like to highlight one of our phenomenal staff attorneys!

Crystal S. Ingram

REP Staff Attorney

Crystal is a staff attorney with our project. She is a proud alumna of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and North Carolina Central University School of Law. Crystal’s passion for education justice stems from her experiences as a student and as a seventh-grade science teacher in Jacksonville, Florida. While in law school, Crystal completed extensive research on the school-to-prison pipeline and its negative implications on Black girls throughout the United States, and later with a narrower focus on Anson County, North Carolina. During law school Crystal received special recognition for her zealous advocacy with NCCU Law’s Juvenile Law Clinic. In her free time, Crystal enjoys spending time with her family, reading, exploring nature, and trying new vegan recipes.

REP's Tip of the Month!

30 Day Complaint Timeline

Most County/District complaint policies state that a complaint should be filed as soon as possible, but no later than 30 days after you are told or you learn about the information that leads to the complaint.

If your child faced any kind of bullying or harassment near the end of the school year and you want to report it so that school can take action, don't wait until the fall to report! Use this chart to find your County/District's policy on general complaints, or this chart to find the policy related to bullying complaints, and check the specific details on how to file a complaint. You can also see our website for more tips on filing complaints with your school.

Note: Complaints submitted after the 30-day period may still be investigated, but delays in reporting may make it much harder for school officials to investigate and respond to complaints.
