Resource Spotlight

We are excited to highlight sections of our website!

Is something going wrong with your child's education, and you've tried to work with the school to fix it?

If your preventative efforts aren't working, you may be able to file a grievance or complaint with your school to get the issue addressed.

Check out our website for a guide to understanding when and how to file a school-based grievance or complaint. Within this resource, there are grievance templates and a spreadsheet with links to each North Carolina County/school district's website, board policy, grievance policy, and complaint policy.

We have updated our resources related to special education! Do you have questions related to special education, IEPs, 504s, or want to learn more about whether your child qualifies for more supports at school? Check out our updated best practices, answers to common questions, and email templates that you can use to contact your child's school.

REP Staff Spotlight

This month we would like to highlight one of our phenomenal staff attorneys!

Hetali Lodaya

Equal Justice Works Fellow

Hetali is a staff attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow with our project. She works to support students and families, as well as community organizations, primarily in Wake, Durham, and Robeson counties. She is a former teacher of middle school science and enrichment programs, and loves working with young people. In her free time, she loves reading, making homemade bagels, and hiking - send her your recommendations for your favorite state or local parks. If you are a service provider or community organization in one of her counties, she would love to connect with you!

REP's Tip of the Month!

Special Education Eligibility Timeline

When followed properly, the special education eligibility process has four steps:

(1) identification

(2) referral meeting

(3) evaluation (if determined necessary)

(4) eligibility determination meeting.

All of the steps above must be completed within 90 calendar days from the date that the parent sends the school a written evaluation request or the school refers the student to an IEP Team. The 90-calendar day timeline is firm, and does not stop for holidays, summer break, or school closures.

As the school year is coming to an end, if anyone tells you to wait or that "nothing happens over the summer," that's not what the law says. If you believe your child needs to be evaluated for special education services, contact your school in writing immediately! You can use this email template as a guide.
