The 2020 MGSHPA State Tournament has been cancelled. We are happy to report that Hibbing will be the site of the 2021 MGSHPA State Tournament, details to be announced in future Digests. All annual state awards will be suspended for this year, and any reasonable adjustments to protocol will be addressed. Jeff Washburn
Southern Vice President
by Jeff Washburn

Hello to all fellow MGSHPA members. My name is Jeff Washburn and I recently became the South VP. First, let me say what an honor this is to be tapped by our President Rick Wright and the officers for this position. Horseshoe pitching has been part of my life for many years, and it is one of my favorite pastimes.
I was born and raised in Duluth, attended Denfeld High School, and went on to earn degrees from the University of Minnesota and Bemidji State University. I spent my entire 40-year career working in the mining industry, travelling to many countries around the world. Currently, I am mostly retired, doing part time consulting work for a mining wear parts foundry based in Arizona, and also for NASA on their ground support requirements for the new ARTEMIS SLS program at Kennedy Space Center. What a thrill! I have been married now for over 40 years to my wife Brenda. We live in Shoreview, have 2 grown children and 4 grandchildren.
I started pitching horseshoes in the early 1970's in Duluth under the tutelage of Hots Anderson and Jack O'Connor, so have been at this fine sport for almost 50 years now. I pitched in my first Minnesota State Tournament in 1975, in Jackson, MN. Today, due to advanced degenerative lower back disease and some neuropathy and stenosis, I can only toss a shoe so far so have been pitching from 30'. As an interesting side note, after pitching right-handed for over 20 years, I switched to left-handed in 1997.
I usually pitch in the West St. Paul and Ramsey County leagues, however this year with the virus stuff I am pitching in the Forest Lake League. I try and enter as many tournaments as possible in the summer. I am also a member of the Brevard County Horseshoe Club in Melbourne, FL, and pitch in several regional FL tournaments. I look forward to representing the South region and seeing you all on the courts when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, stay safe everyone.

I want to first wish all of you the best of luck in dealing with the perils we all are facing. Stay safe and healthy, and pitch some shoes if you get the chance. I would once again issue a plea to all of our members to renew your memberships as a way of supporting our state association. As you can imagine, horseshoe membership numbers across the country are suffering, and many charters are going to be in a world of financial hurt.
So please, send in your membership renewals to Ann Hagman as soon as you can, so as not to forget. And also remember, we do not issue membership cards anymore, but can be printed from the NHPA website as soon as your membership is processed.

All the best
Jerry
Rick Wright

From The President

Hey Everyone,

I hope everyone is staying cool and safe during these tough and uncertain times. I would like to say that I truly understand if any of you pitchers are feeling frustrated or confused about our 2020 Pitching season. I have been approached with questions and comments whether or not we can have league play, reschedule a tournament or make plans for the State Tournament and let me tell you it has not been easy to get these answers. I support any tournament director who wants to hold a tournament and I hope they get the entries needed to have it. I have canceled the RJ Challenge due to COVID and I decided based on some interest from fellow pitchers, to reschedule RJ Challenge for Saturday, August 1st. with a deadline of July 15th. As of today, I do not have enough entries to hold a tournament but I am still taking entries.

As an Association, we are sad to announce that the 2020 Minnesota State Tournament that was being held in Hibbing MN has been canceled. We feel this is best for the safety of all our members. I hope this takes away some of the uncertainty or any pressures you may feel while socially distancing yourselves. The Hibbing Club has informed me that they are still interested in hosting the tournament in 2021 and we appreciate that very much.

In my 19 years of being the MGSHPA President, this is the hardest letter I have ever had to write. I know that we did not have much of a 2020 season, but we still need your support. If you are an active member and have not renewed your membership, please purchase your 2020 membership card to keep our association at the State and National level strong for the future. The membership dues are $38.

The board would like to thank you all for your understanding and support.

Hope to see you on the courts soon!

Rick

Happy 4th of July!

As I am writing this my parents and I are traveling to Greenville , Ohio for the 60th Annual Ringer Classic Tournament. It has been a bucket list Tournament and with how everything unfolded with the World Tournament I figured it would be an ideal year to see if it would work. My dad Paul Olson and I are both participating in the tournament so that is fun and exciting, it will be our first Tournament of the summer and it's going to be a hot one that's for sure. I will post an article in the next digest with a recap of the Tournament so stay tuned for that!

I hope everyone has had or is starting to get out to do some pitching whether that is league play or just out in the backyard. The weather has been awesome that is for sure.

I would like to encourage everyone that feels comfortable and safe to come out and pitch in some of the up-coming Tournaments that are on the Schedule. Santiago , RJ Challenge, Josh Olson Classic and don't forget to sign up for the State Tournament in Hibbing

That's all for now from me, stay safe and I hope to see you all on the Courts very soon!

Josh
