Dear RRDSC Members,
As the new fall season quickly approaches, we are proud to say that the feeling among our staff, coaches, and players is one of genuine excitement. With so many uncertainties caused by COVID-19, this excitement has been building on the foundation of our safe and successful return to play this fall. We have worked hard to develop and implement new health and safety policies across all of our teams, with the vision of creating a safe environment where players can focus on and enjoy playing soccer. This means that your player's health and safety is our top priority this fall season and beyond.
Our goal is to put together a fantastic fall season for all of our players. It won’t be without challenges and give and take on everyone’s part, but together we can make the next few months fun, memorable, and, most importantly, safe for us all.
To date, 291 players have put their confidence in Rio Rapids Durango Soccer Club and registered for the fall season. We feel confident in our efforts to safely return players to the fields this fall, but it needs to be a collective effort with all parties, coaches, parents, players, and spectators adhering to the both RRDSC and official health guidelines and parameters.Failing to do so could jeopardize our players, coaches, and spectators health, and potentially limit or even suspend the fall soccer season.
Here are a few documents that will help further detail what our Club and the organizations that we work with are doing in relation to the safety of Colorado soccer players, the effects that COVID-19 has had on our children’s lives, and the general safety of participation in youth soccer.
-
Colorado Soccer Association developed comprehensive guidance for member clubs like RRDSC incorporating CDC recommendations on how to minimize potential transmission of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of participants, including the players, coaches, referees, and parents. They state, “With the conditions and suggestions outlined in this document, we believe Colorado Soccer and its collective clubs can keep the Colorado soccer community safe while resuming the sport in its full capacity.”
-
Dr. Michelle A. Barron, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infection Disease at University of Colorado Denver, who also serves as Medical Director, Infection Prevention and Control, wrote a letter in support of participation in Colorado youth soccer following the guidelines developed by the Colorado Soccer Association, stating, “If the guidelines are followed appropriately, the risk for transmission of COVID-19 is low, but the benefit to the youth players is immeasurable.”
Additionally, not a single reported case of player-to-player COVID-19 transmission has been reported to the Colorado Soccer Association, the governing body of youth soccer in Colorado overseeing 70,000 youth soccer players. This is possible because of the efforts of local youth soccer leaders, coaches, parents, players, and referees - all of whom are working together to bring youth sports back to life through common sense practices that support the safety and happiness of our youth.
To make this season happen, we need everyone’s patience, help, and support. The safety of our players and the success of this season won’t just be because of the processes and policies we've worked to implement across the Club, but rather a collective effort by all parties.

In the Fall of 2014 RRDSC began using age specific Player Standards to better break down the process of player development. Player Standards are a great way to encourage players to work on their game and letting the player know what they need to learn to go to the next level. It is also meant to get the kids to understand what they have to do when they come to practice AND what they need to keep doing away from practice on their own. Youth soccer is entirely about the development of the whole player, therefore, it is the aim of RRDSC to foster player growth through age appropriate standards while gaining comprehensive tactical and technical skills required to play in all positions and facets of the game.

How to be a Great Sports Parent During and After COVID-19
|
Many years ago, when I first started Changing the Game Project, I travelled to Los Angeles to speak at a parent education day for The Brentwood School. The keynote speaker that day was psychologist and author Madeline Levine. She has written two NY Times bestsellers on parenting (The Price of Privilege and Teach Your Children Well), and just released a third book, Ready or Not: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Uncertain and Rapidly Changing World. She is also the co-founder of Challenge Success, a Stanford Graduate School of Education initiative to decrease the stress and anxiety so many of our children are facing due to the overemphasis on test scores and homework in many of our schools.

Dogs are not allowed on any of the field venues and surrounding properties. This is part of our agreement with the City of Durango and School District 9R. If you have a dog with you at any practice, game or tournament, you will be asked to leave. The Field Marshall can take whatever action is necessary to have the dog removed from the property.
