Rio Rapids Alliance Q&A
Dear RRDSC Members,

With the Fall season getting underway the club is grateful that we are together again on the pitch. Even with all the obstacles, with the efforts of the Board of Directors, Directors, coaches, managers, parents and players we are in the process of having another great season during uncertain times. It is very special to be a part of something bigger. A team is defined as a group of people who perform interdependent tasks to work toward accomplishing a common mission or specific objective. Collectively we make a great team!

As we move forward into the season having new experiences and creating new memories we wanted to take a moment to revisit the philosophy of RRDSC and some of the things we have achieved together, as a club.

Creating respectful leaders that positively influence others through the sport of soccer.

Rio Rapids Durango Soccer Club has been dedicated to the sport of soccer since 1993. The purpose of RRDSC is to teach and promote the game of soccer, and guide all players through a journey of self-development. By working together to foster skill advancement and tactical understanding in a supportive environment, we mentor players to become individuals that have a positive influence on others. We firmly believe that our players’ learning experiences in the game will equip them for success in life. The pillars of this foundation are rooted in the following key areas of development:

*Character

*Commitment

*Work Ethic

*Selflessness

*Leadership

RRDSC is a non-profit organization currently with 331 members and 20 teams. RRDSC is committed to educating young people aged 8-18 about the importance of sportsmanship and fellowship while providing a high-quality soccer experience. The EIS Durango Shootout Soccer Tournament (founded in 1995) is our primary fundraiser for the year and offers businesses visibility to 140+ teams. In 2019 the Shootout brought in 2.3 million dollars to the City of Durango. Unfortunately, the 2020 Shootout was canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic but we were able to hold the 2021 tournament with 120 teams.

To date for the Fall 2021- Spring 2022 soccer season RRDSC has provided 28 families with scholarships for a total of $14,000. These scholarships help cover club registration fees, uniforms and tournament costs. RRDSC supplements 58% of every player’s registration fee to support every family in our soccer community.

RRDSC & The Community

  • Donated $40,000 to the construction of the Smith Sports Complex. This, along with letters from our members supported the Cities efforts in getting a GOCO grant.
  • DHS soccer teams are almost entirely current or former club players
  • Many players have gone on to play college soccer over the years
  • Budget of $20k for scholarships (automatic eligibility for players on school lunch program).
  • Fees cover half of each player's cost - other half comes from fundraising, sponsors, donations.
  • Successfully hosted CSA Tournament during 2020 and followed Covid protocols with no cases reported as a result.
  • Colorado Soccer Association (CSA) Tournament awarded to Durango Soccer for 2020 and 2021. The CSA Cup is half the size of The EIS Durango Shootout & generates income for City
  • Durango Shootout economic impact-generated estimated $60k lodging and sales taxes in 2019.

RRDSC Community Service Programs “Go Out And Lead (GOAL)”

  • Outreach Program – Working with 9R to offer a Free after school soccer program. Free summer camp for Bayfield students.
  • TOPSoccer-Rama – Annual one-day event for adults and children with disabilities.
  • Service, Soccer & Socks – Annual club-wide service event partnering with Durango 9R School District helping them get ready for the new school year.
  • Individual Team Service Projects – RRDSC teams complete at least one service project a soccer season.

There are a lot of things to be excited for this Fall 2021 - Spring 2022 season. The Durango High School Boys are off to a strong start and getting to enjoy a normal season! Our teams are back playing in the Four Corners Youth Soccer League and the Duke City Soccer League. RRDSC is hosting the CSA Cup again this fall and the EIS Durango Shootout Soccer Tournament next spring. The kids are back in school five days a week benefiting from being together in a safe and healthy learning environment. Lastly we get to be together once again as a family, team and club out of the field. RRDSC wishes everyone a healthy, happy and safe soccer season!

RRDSC Player Exit Standards
In the Fall of 2014 RRDSC began using age specific Player Standards to better break down the process of player development. Player Standards are a great way to encourage players to work on their game and letting the player know what they need to learn to go to the next level. It is also meant to get the kids to understand what they have to do when they come to practice AND what they need to keep doing away from practice on their own. Youth soccer is entirely about the development of the whole player, therefore, it is the aim of RRDSC to foster player growth through age appropriate standards while gaining comprehensive tactical and technical skills required to play in all positions and facets of the game.

Please take moment to review the Player Exit Standards

11 Thoughts About Teamwork
by Jon Gordon

1. Teams rise and fall on culture, leadership, relationships, attitude and effort.

Great teams have a great culture driven by great leadership. Relationships are meaningful and teammates are connected. The collective attitude is very positive and everyone on the team works hard to accomplish their mission.

2. It’s all about teamwork. Sometimes you are the star and sometimes you help the star.

3. If you want to be truly great you have to work as hard to be a great teammate as you do to be a great player.

I tell this to athletes all the time but the same is true for any profession. When we work hard to be a great team member we make everyone around us better.

4. Your team doesn’t care if you are a superstar. They care if you are a super team member.

5. Three things you control every day are your attitude, your effort and your actions to be a great teammate.

It doesn’t matter what is happening around you and who you think is being unfair. Every day you can focus on being positive, working hard and making others around you better. If you do that great things will happen.

6. One person can’t make a team but one person can break a team. Stay positive!

Make sure you don’t let energy vampires sabotage your team. Post a sign that says “No Energy Vampires” allowed and keep them off the bus. Most importantly, decide to stay positive.

7. Great team members hold each other accountable to the high standards and excellence their culture expects and demands.

8. Team beats talent when talent isn’t a team.

9. Great teams care more. They care more about their effort, their work and their team members.

10. We > me

Unity is the difference between a great team and an average team. United teams are connected and committed to each other. They are selfless instead of selfish. They put the team first and know together we accomplish more.

11. You and your team face a fork in the road each day. You can settle for average and choose the path of mediocrity or you can take the road less traveled and chase greatness.

It’s a choice you make each day. Which path will your team take?
NO DOGS
Dogs are not allowed on any of the field venues and surrounding properties. This is part of our agreement with the City of Durango and School District 9R. If you have a dog with you at any practice, game or tournament, you will be asked to leave. The Field Marshall can take whatever action is necessary to have the dog removed from the property.
