Spring 2023

Dear RRDSC Members,

Thank you for being patient as we navigate finding spaces for our teams to practice until the City fields are open for play. I know we are all grateful for the winter we had as it has been a great ski season, and we need the moisture to help protect our forests from wildfire. Along with this it should be a great season for those who like to recreate in the river!

Having been denied use of Durango School District 9R gymnasiums it limited our options for indoor space. Moving forward we secured space at the Fort Lewis College Student Life Center, Bayfield High School, the little turf arena on Dirk's Field at FLC, and our coaches have been using parking lots. With some creativity and flexibility we have been able to get in training sessions to prepare for league and tournament games. The fields are scheduled to open on April 10th and we will start our normal practice schedules on grass!

There is a lot to look forward to this spring with the 28th Centura Mercy Durango Shootout

Soccer Tournament (May 12-14). Along with this we are happy to announce the return of 7th Annual Durango Soccer Awards on April 16th, 6-7:30pm at the Fort Lewis College Concert Hall. This is a great event where we celebrate all our players, teams, coaches, volunteers and the Durango Soccer Community. Last, Durango Youth Soccer Association (DYSA) turns 30 this year! We are honored to be a part of this organization and community.

Here's to another great season and we will see you out on the fields!

RRDSC Player Exit Standards
In the Fall of 2014 RRDSC began using age specific Player Standards to better break down the process of player development. Player Standards are a great way to encourage players to work on their game and letting the player know what they need to learn to go to the next level. It is also meant to get the kids to understand what they have to do when they come to practice AND what they need to keep doing away from practice on their own. Youth soccer is entirely about the development of the whole player, therefore, it is the aim of RRDSC to foster player growth through age appropriate standards while gaining comprehensive tactical and technical skills required to play in all positions and facets of the game.

Please take moment to review the Player Exit Standards
RRDSC is expanding coaching opportunities, hiring across all levels of the Club!

From Director of Coaching Jimmy Hall

I have been using this video with my new team. When I started observing them last fall, I noticed the talent right away, but couldn't figure out our lack of success. To watch a team go on the attack and be inside the 6 yard box and not score... and then have the play transition to the opposite end and get scored on was crazy to see. I asked myself, do they have the technical skills to pass and dribble to tactically possess the ball and create scoring changes (YES). So, why are we not scoring? Do we understand 1v1 defending techniques and small group defending concepts? (YES). So why are we giving up goals? Understanding that they came from a much smaller field in 9v9 and now are competing on a much larger field in 11v11 the answer was easy. They need to move, and keep moving. Physically and Mentally soccer players have to stay moving and engaged to be successful. But how to reach my players at their 13 year old mindset was the real challenge. How to connect? I like this video because it is exciting, motivating and has some key concepts that verbally I can use as Mental Triggers for my athletes. Instead of yelling set all game like my youth coaches all game. Or rather than shouting across the field when players are shooting and distract them. I ask them to "BE A SHARK". You will have to watch the video to understand why. But it works and I am excited to watch my boys grow this Spring Season.

Creating the Ideal Learning Environment

BY JOHN O'SULLIVAN /  THURSDAY, 01 SEPTEMBER 2022 /  PUBLISHED IN COACHINGLEADERSHIPTALENT DEVELOPMENT

I have been on the road the last few weeks, visiting with some high performance teams and coaches across numerous sports from New York to Belgium to Vermont and finally, Colorado. In that time, regardless of whether these coaches were working with adults or children, similar questions kept popping up.

“What does a great learning environment look like?”

“Can we be competitive and also create a great family atmosphere?”

“I want to push my athletes, am I being too easy on them, too soft?”

My friend Bill Beswick, the world renowned sports psychologist, once told me our job as coaches is to take our athletes to a place they have never been, and likely would not get to on their own. To do that, we need to be demanding, we need to consistently challenge and stretch our athletes, and we need to have high standards and expectations. But does reaching a new competitive level require coaches to lose all humanity in pursuit of excellence? I do not believe it does.
