In need of a quick break from strawberries and stone fruit? Pick up a basket of organic blackberries! Right now, you’ll find some of the sweetest blackberries around at the one and only Kaki Farm. There, you'll also have the chance to chat with the equally sweet farm owner Nicasio Soria, who mans the stand each summer. Originally from Zacatecas, Mexico, Nicasio worked as a farmhand at Kaki in 1979 before purchasing the property himself in 1990. He has a berry interesting story to share.

Easy Eating: Make the most of blackberry season, especially since they're not easy to pick! For breakfast, try them fresh over Achadinha Cheese Company’s Kefir cheese. Transform them into a Blackberry Limeade or Berry Syrup (found in The Homemade Pantry: 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying and Start Making, for sale at our Eco Store). Make a Blackberry Fennel Pizza, or smother this Grilled Brie With Blackberry Basil Salsa on a slice of Morell’s sourdough. Finally, for dessert, this Fig and Blackberry Tart is worth the effort.
Tony's Blackberry Buckwheat Crepes

Make crepes like Tony's Kettle Corn!
Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup buckwheat flour
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 tbsp honey (optional)

Instructions
  1. Melt butter and set aside. In a large bowl, sift together the buckwheat flour, all purpose flour, and salt. In a mixer, blend all ingredients together until smooth (approximately 2 minutes). Strain batter through a fine-mesh sieve. Cover and let rest, refrigerated, for at least an hour, preferably overnight.
  2. Heat a medium sized frying or saute pan over medium heat. Spread butter over pan, but wipe most of it off with a towel. Pour 2 ounces of batter into pan. Pick up pan and tilt and swirl so batter covers entire bottom of pan. Loosen the edges of the crepe with a spatula and flip it over. Cook on other side until lightly golden brown (less than 1 minute) and remove onto plate.
  3. Continue with remaining batter. Top with fresh blackberries and whip cream.

This is a first come, first serve event. Space is limited to 20 people.
Help Judge our Vendor Salsa Contest!
Did you know that every August the farmers' market hosts a secret salsa contest amongst its vendors?

This contest is normally judged by our staff but this year we’re giving one lucky person the opportunity to be a guest judge.

Take a picture of you buying your own salsa ingredients at any of the Berkeley Farmers’ Markets and post it on instagram with the hashtag #BFMSalsaContest. We’ll choose one person on Thursday 8/11 at 7PM to help us judge at our Saturday, Downtown Berkeley, Market on August 13th.
