Orange you glad Cara Caras are at the Berkeley Farmers’ Markets now? We sure are. Kishu and Satsuma mandarins add color to our markets this winter too, but Cara Caras stand apart with their signature sweetness, low acidity, and gorgeous pink flesh.
Don't worry, there's still plenty of time to grab them at Kaki Farm this week. The final market of 2022 isn't until Thursday, December 22, and we’ll be back in full swing again on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
Easy Eating: For breakfast, squeeze Cara Caras into fresh juice or whip them into an Orange Marmalade. For dinner, try a Noche Buena Salad, a classic Mexican dish utilizing everything abundant at the market right now. For dessert, check out our latest blog on Navel Orange Shaker Pie, compliments of Edith’s Pie and Berkeley Farmers’ Market regular Chef Mike Raskin. Cheers to a holiday as sweet and bright as your first orange slice this season!

Ingredients
- 1 orange, sliced in half
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- Handful sweetened, shredded coconut
- Pinch of ground cinnamon or ginger

Broiled Orange with Toasted Coconut
The warm, bright bite you need this winter!
|
Instructions
- Set your broiler to high and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Slice the orange in half. Run a knife between the flesh and peel and then cut slices, following the natural orange segments. This makes for easier eating!
- Rub a teaspoon of brown sugar on each half of the orange.
- Broil until bubbly and charred in a few places, about 6 minutes.
- Meanwhile, place the coconut in a small dry skillet over medium heat. Allow the coconut to get golden brown, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.
- Serve oranges warm with the toasted coconut. If desired top with cinnamon or ginger.
