Many folks are back in school, but with the amount of peaches at the market right now, it doesn’t feel like anything other than peak summer. If you like a hint of acid, try a yellow variety like the hearty and perfectly balanced Cassie found only at Double Wild Farm.

In case you haven’t heard, Double Wild Farm is the new Peach Jamboree! Danny and Drew finally found the right folks to pass their land to: Hayley and Jesse, two young but lifelong farmers ready for a new chapter in their careers. We’re happy to see this land passed to the next generation of farmers, especially with the trend of more and more farmers heading toward retirement without their children ready or able to carry on the tradition. We’re also happy to see Danny and Drew finally fulfill their wish of moving to Vermont.

Double Wild’s Cassies will only be available for another week or two at the South and Downtown Farmers’ Markets, but more tasty varieties will keep coming for another few months at Kashiwase Farm, Frog Hollow Farm, Blossom Bluff Orchard, and Kaki Farm.

Peach Salsa

The perfect summer condiment, adapted from Alice Water's "The Art of Simple Food", available at the Ecology Center Store.

Makes 1.5 cups.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe peaches
  • 1 small red spring onion (or ½ red onion), diced
  • 1 serrano or jalapeño chile, seeds removed, finely diced (or a bell pepper if preferred)
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • ½ bunch of cilantro, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Dip the peaches in boiling water for 10-15 seconds. Slip off the skins, cut the flesh away from the pits. Medium dice peaches and place in a bowl.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and mix to combine.
  3. Enjoy with chips! It's also great served over your favorite white fish from Little Fish Co.
