Gearing up to host this holiday season? Prepping a big pot of soup to get you through a cold week? Looking for staples to tide you over during the Berkeley Farmers’ Markets winter break? Make sure celery is on your grocery list! Celery is one of those ingredients with a million uses that seems to last forever in your fridge. We can count on it to add depth and aroma to so many of the dishes that comfort us this time of year – dishes like minestrone soup, gumbo, or a classic stuffing.
Whatever you choose to whip up this next week, we hope it is delicious and shared with those most important to you. Thank you for choosing to include small California farmers at the center of your tables and traditions, and Happy Holidays from the Berkeley Farmers' Market team!
Find celery at Oya Organics, Narci Organics, Golden Rule Organics, Avalos Farm, and Full Belly Farm this winter. Tomorrow, Saturday, December 21 is the last market of 2024. We’ll be back in full swing on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

Celery Soup
Adapted from Epicurious. Serves 4.

- Combine the celery, potato, onion, and butter in a medium saucepan. Season with kosher salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until onion is softened, 8–10 minutes.
- Pour in 3 cups low-sodium broth and bring to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until potato is fork-tender, 8–10 minutes.
- Transfer celery mixture to a blender; add ¼ cup chopped dill. Blend on low speed until puréed, then increase speed to medium-high and blend until smooth. Strain soup through a fine-mesh sieve into a medium bowl. Add ½ cup heavy cream and stir to combine.
- Divide soup among bowls. Drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and top with celery leaves.

We Need Your Support to Scale Up Local Efforts to Create Lasting Change |
At the Ecology Center, we understand that local victories can be leveraged to create global solutions. When we successfully enact change at home, we not only improve life in our own community but also create a ripple effect that extends worldwide.
The most recent example of this is our grassroots campaigning to help renew Berkeley’s tax on Big Soda, which passed by over 80% — many cities have and will follow suit. This tax funds local health equity work, which aims to reduce the consumption of sugary drinks, increase the consumption of water, decrease obesity, and build resilient communities.
Whether through increasing healthy food access, cultivating the local food system, leading waste reduction initiatives, or building health and climate equity, our efforts show how local actions can catalyze far-reaching change. We need your support to make this happen. Now more than ever, the urgency of these issues is being felt at home and abroad. Help us stand strong in these challenging times. Please give this year—Your contribution makes our work possible!
