National Farmers’ Market Week is approaching, August 6 – 12! This annual celebration illuminates the vital role farmers’ markets play in our nation’s food system. As you may know, farmers’ markets are more than just the outdoor alternative to your grocery store. They are vital food access points, supporters of small farms and farmland preservation, local business incubators, and action hubs for a healthier, more sustainable planet.
The Ecology Center’s Farmers’ Markets have been at the heart of this work in Berkeley since 1987. In recognition of this, the Berkeley City Council proclaimed the first week of August Berkeley Farmers’ Market Week at their convening this past Tuesday.
The best way to join the celebration? Visit the market, of course! The scent of ripe muskmelon is in the air right now, making it one of the best times of year to shop. Follow your nose all the way to Riverdog or Full Belly Farm, and right to the Charentais melon section. This petite French variety is ambrosial to say the least. Share one with a friend to experience the epitome of summer bliss, and keep an eye on our Instagram this week for a video on how to select the right one.
Easy Eating: For a weekend brunch, maybe a Charentais Melon, with Spiced Quinoa, Yogurt, and Pistachio? For dinner, this Minted Melon, Tomato and Prosciutto Salad is easy, full of ingredients you'll find at market right now, and sure to please alongside your protein of choice.
