Early Girl tomatoes are here! We're happy to have them just in time for the newly proclaimed Berkeley Farmers’ Market Week – a week to recognize the "economic, environmental and health benefits of farmers’ markets", celebrated in conjunction with National Farmers' Market Week.

As you might’ve noticed, at farms like Dirty Girl Produce, these girls didn’t come too early this year. This year’s colder-than-average spring forced farmers to delay their plantings — as long as two months in some places. Farmers are predicting their season to be shorter this year, so be sure to savor them while they’re around.

You can find Early Girls right now at Dirty Girl Produce, Oya Organics, Golden Rule Organics, Full Belly Farm, Riverdog Farm, and Lucero Organics

Easy Eating: This week, pick up a loaf of bread for an Early Girl Panzanella, whip up a simple Tomato Sauce for a weeknight pasta, or try them in Shaobing Sandwich form at the Lion Dance Cafe, who sources many of their ingredients from our markets.

Simple Tomato Salad

A summer favorite adapted from Simply Recipes

Ingredients

For the vinaigrette

  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

For the salad

  • 1/4 medium red onion, very thinly sliced
  • 2 pounds ripe Early Girl tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, mustard, and honey until the honey dissolves. Whisk in the olive oil until blended.
  2. Add the sliced onions into the vinaigrette and tuck them down into the dressing. Set aside to macerate while you assemble the salad.
  3. Cut tomatoes into 1/2-inch-thick slices.
  4. Arrange the tomatoes on a large plate. Lightly shower with freshly ground black pepper.
  5. Pour the dressing and onions over the salad. Scatter with basil and mint. Taste and add more salt and/or pepper, if needed.
