Feijoa – pronounced fay-oh-uh – are a farmers’ market fay-vor-ite! This fruit is nicknamed “pineapple guava” for its intense tropical flavor, but it also gives hints of mint and pine that we welcome in the winter. Look for ones that squish slightly when you squeeze them, and enjoy them as you would a kiwi – slice it in half and scoop out its sweet, tangy, and creamy interior with a spoon.

Fun fact – feijoa trees are beautiful evergreens planted all over the Bay Area as ornamentals. Chances are you have one in your neighborhood but, if not, skip over to one of our markets. Full Belly Farm and Stepladder Creamery have them!

Easy Eating: 'Tis the season for a Spiced Feijoa Shortcake, or make a homemade Feijoa Jam to take advantage of this fruit’s short season.

Roasted Feijoa & Bacon Salad

Ingredients

  • 4 feijoa
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 4 strips of bacon
  • 1 cup arugula
  • ½ pear
  • 200 g ricotta
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • sea salt, pinch

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Trim the top of the feijoa and cut them into quarters lengthwise. Place cut feijoa in a baking dish and drizzle honey on top.
  • Bake in oven for approximately 20 minutes.
  • Increase oven temperature to 400°F.
  • Place the bacon on a lined baking tray and grill for 10 minutes until crispy brown. Remove from oven to cool down. When cool enough to handle, cut each bacon strip into 3-4 pieces.
  • Cut pear in half and thinly slice.
  • Wash and shake dry arugula leaves.
  • Place soft ricotta, 1 tbsp olive oil and a good pinch of salt into food processor. Blend briefly to combine. Then add another 1 tbsp olive oil. Continue to blend until ricotta is smooth and creamy. This will take about 2 minutes.
  • To assemble, start with a layer of arugula, then top with roasted feijoa and roasted bacon. Scatter sliced pear in between roasted feijoa and streaky bacon. Add dollops of whipped ricotta throughout the roasted feijoa salad. Drizzle olive oil to finish. Serve & enjoy!
