2025 is fennel-y here! Our team is rested and ready to put on another wonderful year of farmers’ markets here in Berkeley. We’re also excited to continue exploring ways to be more creative and less wasteful with the fruits of our farmers’ labor, namely by incorporating ingredients that intrigue but intimidate into our meals. Ingredients like fennel!

Luckily, it doesn't take much thought to cook with fennel. Fennel has an anise aroma but it's subtle, and this vegetable can even be used from its round bulb to its wispy fronds. Using it is as easy as dicing up the bulb to add to your mirepoix, or slicing it thinly to toss in a salad. Add whole stalks to a homemade broth, and chop the fronds to garnish your soups, pastas, and salad. Find fennel throughout the winter at Narci Organics, Golden Rule Organics, Riverdog Farm, Full Belly Farm, and Happy Boy Farm.

Winter Fennel Orange Salad

Serves 4 as a side.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 head lettuce
  • 1 finely sliced fennel bulb
  • 1 large orange, peeled and sliced vertically, seeds removed.
  • 3 oz Stepladder Creamery chevre
  • 1/4 lb Kaki Farm walnuts, chopped and roasted

Instructions

  1. In a jar or small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper.
  2. Line your salad plate or bowl with greens and chopped fennel. Arrange slices of orange over top. Sprinkle with toasted walnuts and crumbled cheese.
  3. Drizzle the dressing over, toss, and enjoy!

Learn More About the Berkeley Farmers' Markets

Over $385k worth of nutrition incentives distributed at our markets in 2024

In 2024, our market crew processed over $225,000 worth of CalFresh transactions so that the certified farmers in our farmers' market could accept Calfresh benefits. In addition, our staff distributed $160,000 worth of federal and state- funded Market Match incentives to customers across the three Berkeley Farmers' Markets, making fresh produce more affordable. That's roughly $385,000 worth of extra sales for our farmers and food purveyors, and $385,000 worth of sustainable-produced foods nourishing our community – over $50,000 more than in 2023.

Thank you for supporting our markets!

We'd like to take a moment to extend gratitude to all who generously donated in 2024 to support the operation of the Berkeley Farmers' Markets, as well as those who turned up at the markets week after week to shop and directly benefit the livelihoods of small farmers and food businesses. Our mission to create a more just food system couldn't be attempted without you!
