The aroma of fresh herbs at our markets seem to be getting stronger and stronger with each passing week. Basil, rosemary, and lavender are all around, but did you know they're all part of the mint family? The mint at the market is gorgeous right now and, while it can be tough to think of ways to use up a whole bunch, it's an herb that is more versatile than we give it credit for. Mint adds freshness to raw summer salads, and pairs beautifully with summer nightshades like eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers. It can also help cool off a spicy meal just as well as it can accentuate a sweet treat or cocktail. Find mint at Lou Vue Farm, Vang Family Farm, Full Belly Farm, and Happy Boy Farms right now although other farms like Peach Jamboree will have some fun varieties like Chocolate mint later in the season, too.

Mint Simple Syrup

Use this recipe from Bryant Terry's cookbook 'Afro Vegan' to dress fruit-forward fruit salads and add a splash of summer flavor to seltzers or lemonade.

  • 1 c raw cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 c minced mint
  1. Combine the sugar and the water in a small saucepan over low heat.
  2. Add mint, and stir well. Heat until hot to the touch and the sugar is completely dissolved, about 3 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat and let steep for 8 hours or overnight. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a glass until ready to use.
  4. Refrigerate and use within 2 weeks.

Juneteenth Environmental Justice Poetry Performance

Tuesday June 18, 2024; 2:30-3:30 pm

South Berkeley Farmers' Market

Celebrate Juneteenth a day early with us at the South Berkeley Farmers' Market. The Ecology Center's Poet in Residence, Gabriel Cortez and his cohort will be sharing new work that lift BIPOC voices around food and land sovereignty issues. This event is free and open to the public.

Look who's back at the Berkeley Farmers' Markets!

The Peach Jamboree has returned to the Downtown and South Berkeley Farmers' Markets for the season, and Sierra Cascade is back to the Downtown Berkeley Farmers' Market with organic blueberries in tow.

Gardening questions? Find the Alameda County Master Gardeners at the North Berkeley Farmers' Market on the last Thursday of each month, or Downtown Berkeley Farmers' Market every other Saturday (they're in this Saturday!). Finally, stay tuned for the return of our traveling tailor, Cirrus Wood. We are expecting him to be back by the end of the month.

Farmers' market finds for Father's Day

Still figuring out Father's Day plans? Can't go wrong starting a day early with a morning at the Downtown Berkeley Farmers' Market. Start with a latte from Higher Land coffee before moseying down to Edith's Pie or Vio Pastry for a sweet treat. Pick up a marbled cut from True Grass Farm to grill on Sunday, and drop off those knives or pruning sheers they've been meaning to sharpen at All Things Sharp!
