Especially on the wettest, gloomiest market days, citrus varieties shine bright. Citrus season is at it’s peak right now, meaning you can find handfuls of unique varieties at the Berkeley Farmers’ Markets: from the teeniest kumquats and Kishu mandarins to the sizable, bright yellow oroblanco.

Oroblanco is a cross between a pummelo and white grapefruit. The name translates to “white gold” in Spanish, and it’s obvious why: they’re super sweet with just the right amount of acid. Just cut away the pith and rind to enjoy it to its fullest. Find oroblanco at Blossom Bluff Orchards and Kaki Farm.

Brown Sugar Broiled Oroblanco

Enjoy for breakfast with a scoop of yogurt or dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Serves 4.

Ingredients

  • 2 oroblanco, sliced in half
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Using a grapefruit knife, cut between each segment and around outside edges, being careful not to cut through the peel. Place sliced side up on a baking sheet.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over grapefruit.
  3. Place in the broiler about 4 inches from the heat source. Broil until the sugar has melted and begins to caramelize, about 3–5 minutes. Transfer to individual serving bowls and enjoy.

Learn More About the Berkeley Farmers' Markets

Market Match continues to operate as usual

In light of the Trump administration's recent attempt to freeze federal funding, we wanted to share that we've remained in touch with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA ) and confirmed that we can continue to operate Market Match as usual. For those unfamiliar with Market Match, it is a program employed at over 250 farmers' markets in California – the Berkeley Farmers' Markets included – that gives CalFresh cardholders extra money to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables.

Ecology Center Food & Farming Director moves on

The Ecology Center's dedicated and highly successful Food & Farming Program Director left the Ecology Center at the end of January 2025. We're saddened to see Minni go, but remain grateful for her significant impact on our programs and the community we serve, particularly her key role in leading the movement to secure $35 million to keep the Market Match program running. Thank you and best to you, Minni!
