Brimming with glistening, ruby-jeweled seeds, pomegranates are a true farmers’ market treasure. Beyond just being visually stunning, they also strike the perfect balance between sweet and tart. Each seed’s pop of juice is probably Mother Nature herself showering your taste buds with love.

Find the classic “Wonderful” variety at Full Belly, Riverdog, Kaki, Frog Hollow, and Kashiwase, but keep your eyes peeled for the rarer white variety, too. Smit Farm also has pure pomegranate juice – no sugar added.

Selection Tip: When selecting, pay attention to weight – not color – and choose the fruit that feels heaviest. Cracked skin is also a sign that the fruit ripened fully before being harvested. Looking for the most efficient way to extract the seeds? This 1 minute video will help save you time.

Easy Eating: Sprinkle fresh pomegranate over your usual oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal. If you’re still clinging onto summer, whip up a Muhammara, or Middle Eastern roasted red pepper dip, made with a quick, homemade Pomegranate Molasses. Any leftover molasses can be lent to Halloumi and Veggie Skewers smothered in Pomegranate Tahini Sauce. If your ready to embrace fall, you can't go wrong with Roasted Squash, Pecan, Pomegranate Salad, with an Apple-Pomegranate Cobbler for dessert.

Fermented Pomegranate- Persimmon Relish

Recipe courtesy of Karen Diggs, Kraut Source business owner and longtime Ecology Center member

*Kraut Source available for purchase at the Ecology Center Store.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium, firm Fuyu persimmons, peeled and diced
  • 3/4 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1/2 cup purple onion, small dice
  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley
  • 2 tsp whey, or one probiotic capsule
  • 3/4 tbsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tbsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Enough filtered water to keep fruits submerged by one inch

Instructions

  1. Mix all the ingredients, except water, in a bowl. Pack into a quart-size, wide-mouth mason jar.
  2. Place the *Kraut Source lid onto the jar. Allow to ferment for 4 - 5 days in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight. Check every few days that there is water in the moat, and top off as needed.
  3. When ready, replace Kraut Source with the standard mason jar lid and ring. Transfer to the refrigerator.
