Resolving to eat more greens in 2024? What about more purples? Purple cauliflower is in season right now, ready to add a pop of color to your winter meals. This cool weather crop’s signature color comes from anthocyanin, the same antioxidant found in red cabbage and red wine. Substitute purple cauliflower in any recipe that calls for white cauliflower, but avoid steaming and boiling to retain the veggie’s full color. Head to the Oya Organics and Golden Rule Organics farm stands to get your fix!

Purple Cauliflower Steaks & Chimichurri Sauce

This bright, vegetarian meal serves 4.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head purple cauliflower
  • 1 cup parsley
  • 1 cup cilantro
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 serrano or jalapeno pepper, sliced
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Remove and trim stem from cauliflower head. Cut purple cauliflower vertically in one inch slices.
  3. Place cauliflower on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Brush with just a little bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until fork tender.
  5. Meanwhile, combine all the sauce ingredients, with the exception of the olive oil, in a food processor. Mix on high until well combined, then slowly drizzle in olive oil and mix until completely combined.
  6. When cauliflower comes out of the oven, serve on a plate, drizzle with chimichurri sauce, and enjoy.

Learn More About the Berkeley Farmers' Markets

Over 300K in nutrition incentives distributed in 2023, but future funding remains uncertain

In 2023, our small but mighty farmers' market crew distributed over $208,000 worth of CalFresh and $121,000 worth of Market Match to customers across the three Berkeley Farmers' Markets. That's roughly $330,000 worth of extra sales for our farmers and food purveyors, and $330,000 worth of sustainable-produced foods nourishing our community.

Unfortunately, due to a projected deficit in the California state budge, our Market Match may be reduced from $15 to $10 in the near future. The Ecology Center, who manages this program for the state of California, will continue to advocate for our farmers and customers at the State and Federal level but may ask for your help with phone calls and letter writing in the coming weeks.

New Vendor Alert: Saltie Co. Granola

After years of making granola for family and friends here in Berkeley, mother-daughter duo Vivien and Savannah Tuma took the leap to join our North Berkeley farmers' market at the very end of 2023. Together they whip up the three flavors that they've found their community loves most: chocolate chip, raspberry coconut, and almond vanilla. Find your favorite next Thursday!
