This week, we’re passionate about passionfruit! Passionfruit have been bringing warm, autumnal hues to the market, as well as the zing we need to stay alert as daylight starts to wane.
Purple passion fruit is the species that thrives here in California. You might even have a plant vining in your yard, although it often doesn’t get hot enough for the fruit to get as sweet as what you’d find grown at Brokaw Ranch or Stepladder Creamery down south.
The funny thing about this fruit is that it tastes its very best when it looks its worst. Its wrinkly, somewhat discolored skin indicates that the fruit is super ripe and itching to sow its seeds. To get the best bang for your buck, these are the ones to select, especially ones that are on the heavier side. Add it to your morning yogurt, use it in a marinade or salad dressing, or get creative with your baking!
You can find passion fruit at the above mentioned stands every Tuesday at the South Berkeley Farmers' Market and every Saturday at the Downtown Berkeley Farmers' Market.
