This week, we’re passionate about passionfruit! Passionfruit have been bringing warm, autumnal hues to the market, as well as the zing we need to stay alert as daylight starts to wane.

Purple passion fruit is the species that thrives here in California. You might even have a plant vining in your yard, although it often doesn’t get hot enough for the fruit to get as sweet as what you’d find grown at Brokaw Ranch or Stepladder Creamery down south.

The funny thing about this fruit is that it tastes its very best when it looks its worst. Its wrinkly, somewhat discolored skin indicates that the fruit is super ripe and itching to sow its seeds. To get the best bang for your buck, these are the ones to select, especially ones that are on the heavier side. Add it to your morning yogurt, use it in a marinade or salad dressing, or get creative with your baking!

You can find passion fruit at the above mentioned stands every Tuesday at the South Berkeley Farmers' Market and every Saturday at the Downtown Berkeley Farmers' Market.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup caster sugar
  • ⅔ cup strained passionfruit pulp (with seeds)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 egg yolks, from large eggs
  • Zest of ½ a lemon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed and cold

Passionfruit Curd

An ideal topping for pancakes, yogurt, & cheesecakes

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the sugar, strained passionfruit pulp, eggs, egg yolks, and zest in a small heavy-based, stainless steel saucepan.
  2. Stir over low-medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Add the butter two to three pieces at a time, making sure to stir until each addition is melted and incorporated.
  4. Turn the heat to low and continue cooking the mixture for two to three minutes until it is thickened. It should coat the back of a spoon without dripping.
  5. Strain the curd through a fine mesh sieve.
  6. Pour into sterilized preserve jars and store in the fridge. Makes 1 ⅔ cups and can be kept for 1 week.
