Fall fruits are beginning to trickle into the market, and dates are among them. Yup, dates are a fresh fruit harvested around this time each year. While you’ll see the carmelly, fully-ripened Barhi, Medjool and other varieties nearly year round, blink and you might miss the beloved Yellow Barhi. Barhi are one of the few types of dates that you can eat half ripened, and they’re delicious. They’re still sweet, but less so and with an apple-like crunch that makes them all too easy to snack on.

You can find Yellow Barhi at Flying Disc Ranch on Tuesdays and Saturdays, but only for a few more weeks. We're sad to report that Tropical Storm Hilary destroyed over 25% of their crop just a month ago. It's likely that you'll see less of Flying Disc this year, so get them while the gettin’s good.

Easy Eating: Yellow Barhi are best eaten fresh, but you can get creative with them, too. For breakfast, try them in a Tropical Breakfast Bowl or add some oomph to your fish tacos with a Yellow Barhi “Slawsa”.

Yellow Barhi with Garlic and Herbs

Rosh Hashanah has passed, but freshYellow Barhi are still at the market. This recipe is adapted from the Asif Culinary Institute and serves 4 to 6 as a side.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cups Yellow Barhi dates, halved and pitted
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup chopped cilantro
  • ½ cup chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a cast iron skillet over a high heat and add the dates. Fry the dates, occasionally stirring to ensure they are beautifully golden on all sides.
  2. Add the garlic, thyme, salt, and black pepper and sauté for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and set aside until ready to serve.
  3. To serve: if necessary, warm the dates in the oven over a low heat. Transfer to a serving plate, add the chopped cilantro and parsley, and mix well.
