Aunties gathered. Friendships forged. Career days inspired. Exams enabled. School and community awards won. Higher education pursued. Communities strengthened. International Day of the Girl celebrated. Art created. Some art sold. Boy's club launched. Gender equality debated. Community buy-in increased. Volunteers' talents shared. English improved. Poetry written. Plays performed. More girls reached. Hard conversations had. Unfailing support given. Self-esteem built. Strategic planning begun. And lots of laughter along the way.

Not bad for a year.

Changing Traditional Mindsets

Sisonke, GSGC's first sponsored boys club, has begun lobbying community leaders to support the club's program of engaging boys and men in support of women/girl empowerment. The club recently visited the village head in their community to discuss gender based traditions and beliefs.

Sisonke mentor Nyika-ino Muyambo, reported an amazing conversation that resulted in the village head and the boys concluding:
  • Male initiation rites produce aggressive men who become perpetrators of domestic violence and treating women like objects.
  • The old society regard a woman as a person having no value or decision making power -which is why there is little to no effort to educate or empower a girl, the focus is on boys.
  • Their culture has maintained cultural beliefs and practices that continue the cycle of poverty in their communities.
By engaging community leaders in open discussions about these issues, the GSGC-sponsored boys clubs can help drive change. As proof, the village head said he is willing to be part of the Sisonke program to lobby other traditional leaders on the subject of girl empowerment, and raising boys to understand the value of confident, educated girls and women.
