ABC's of Recycling
H for Household Hazardous Waste:
it's Too Toxic to Trash!
There are two H's in this month's ABC's of Smart Recycling. H is for Household Hazardous Waste.

IMPORTANT: Changes at Naperville's HHW Facility
Due to a fire at an Illinois EPA processing plant, Naperville facility CANNOT accept the following items: pesticides, fertilizers, aerosol cans, asbestos materials, batteries (marine, sump pump and non-alkaline), household cleaners, drain openers, pool chemicals, and unknown hazardous substances.
Please check the list at to learn what is/is not currently accepted.

Note: There may be increased wait times at the facility due to these changes. Questions? Call 630-420-6095.
STEM-A-PALOOZA Goes to the Fair!
SCARCE visited the DuPage County Fair with our STEM-A-PALOOZA exhibit. Kids of all ages had fun learning about recycling, composting and protecting our watersheds.

We KNOW science is fun!
Middle School Students Choose State Rock
Pleasantdale Middle School in Burr Ridge helped create a state rock for Illinois with the help of over 400 schools, local geologists, gem clubs and other rock enthusiasts across the state. Dolostone was chosen winner and Gov. Pritzger signed the choice in law on June 6th!

More Literacy at the Laundromat
Three more towns have been added to the growing list of Laundromat Libraries created by SCARCE.

Built and maintained by SCARCE volunteers, the shelves of these special libraries are filled with free books for children and adults.

Fun Days For Your Calendar
Plant a Tree Day - September 28
New trees are needed all over the world--to replace those lost in fires, keep us cool in summer and help sequester carbon from our air. Fall is a wonderful time to plant a tree! Talk with your school about making tree planting a priority. Plant a Tree Day Information.
National Walk & Bike to School Day - October 12
Walking and biking to school "gives kids a strong sense of self-confidence and a better quality of life," according to the National Center for Safe Routes to School. Walk And Bike to School Day
Look out! Pumpkin Smash is Coming!
Last year's Pumpkin Smash was BIGGER than ever!

Schools from across the whole country heard about our efforts to keep holiday pumpkins out of landfill by composting and started Smash events! The Pumpkin Smash can align with educational standards through both science and math.

Save the Date! On Tuesday, October 18, 5:00-6:30pm, SCARCE will be offering this popular, hands-on workshop. Assemble your own one-of-a-kind teaching tool to help students identify the many resources needed to produce things we use every day.

Tours of the SCARCE facility will be available from 4:30-5:00pm, before the workshop begins. Come see all that we do at SCARCE!

For High School students, ages 14 and older.

Younger students can help sort and peel donated crayons for the Super Crayon project. This work can be done offsite.
