A monthly update to inspire collaborative youth leadership and action for our blue planet
Organization Spotlight:

PainelMar is a Brazil-based organization, whose mission is to act as a multi-sector collaborative platform of individuals and organizations, focused on the sharing of knowledge, collaborative decision-making, and creating sustainable ocean policy. The organization was born during the preparation phase of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, in Rio in 2012.

PainelMar runs several programs in addition to its digital platform, including a joint effort with RareBrazil called the Young State Ambassadors of Social and Environmental Edu-Communication Project. It aims to give young leaders the ability to act on the political agendas of their coastal states and municipalities through social and environmental education and advocacy. Read more here.
World Ocean Day is excited to announce the newest members of the Youth Advisory Council! Next call for applications to join the Council coming in June 2022!
Thank you to the hundreds of young people who applied this year; with so many deserving individuals from dozens of countries, it was a huge challenge for the Selection Committee to make their choices.

Congratulations to these 13 inspiring young leaders who represent diverse backgrounds and interests from 12 countries! Each will provide fresh perspectives and ideas to help further develop World Ocean Day as a unique rallying point for celebration and action around the world on 8 June and advance action for our shared ocean and climate in exciting ways year-round!
Youth Spotlight:
Estefanía Aphang
Estefanía Aphang is a 17-year-old advocate for sustainability and ocean and climate conservation from Perú. Living in Lima, on the Pacific coast, she has grown up with a deep connection to the ocean.

Estefanía was elected to lead her school's Education for Sustainable Development Council where they advocate for action to advance the the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They organize fun projects and fundraise for service events targeting youth. She also helped launch five SDG Interest Circles, student groups which connect their passion to sustainability, raise awareness, and tackle environmental issues and led the Greenstock X “200 Años Más” Conference as well as the Beyond COP21 Conference, both aimed at achieving a sustainable culture. Her hope is to inspire and empower young people to be change-makers and show that every action can make a difference!

We are chatting with the Junior Docents from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum who are working to educate their landlocked community about the harm of inland plastic pollution usage (and encouraging action for our ocean no matter where you live).

  • Future Leaders Climate Summit 2022 - 3-7 March 2022. For 18-30-year-olds to discuss climate policy, communications, advocacy, and individual action with climate and energy experts. Deadline to apply 14 November.
