Organization Spotlight: Re-Earth Initiative The Re-Earth Initiative was co-founded in 2020 by a group of young leaders with the intent of mobilizing people to take action for the planet on a global scale. They launched a climate pledge program on Earth Day 2020, and the campaign garnered international success. The organization is now focused on creating easily accessible toolkits on different climate topics, in multiple different languages. They have also created a series of webinars in partnership with other groups, including the Waterkeeper Alliance. One of the central values of the the Re-Earth Initiative is a commitment to climate justice, meaning they focus on uplifting the voices of historically marginalized and frontline communities. Upcoming Events and Opportunities Here are a few ways you can get more informed and involved: Calling All Young People: Tell President Biden to Strongly Protect 30% of Our Ocean - Sign the Petition! Sustainable Ocean Alliance: Call for Applications -Youth Policy Advisory Council, application deadline 31 December 2021. Solv[ED] Youth Innovation Challenge - If you are aged 24 and under and an innovative problem-solver in your community and the world, $200,000+ in prize funding is available for selected solutions. Application Deadline: 18 January 2022. IOFF Student Film Competition - Submit by 22 February. Films must be made entirely by an individual student or a group of students. Keeling Curve Prize - Develop a project to mitigate the effects of climate change in one of five categories. The winner of each receives $25,000. Apply by 10 February. EarthBeat "From Risk to Resilience" Short Film Challenge - Open to ages 14-32, from any country. Submissions due by 18 February. World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council Spotlight: Lela DeVine Lela DeVine is a first year student at Barnard College of Columbia University studying cellular and molecular biology with a minor in science, ethics, and policy. Her current research focuses on experimental work in the biomedical sciences regarding antibiotic resistance and horizontal gene transfer. She hopes her research and advocacy can inspire other young women in both STEM and environmental fields to continue to strive in creating, sharing, and pushing forward crucial interdisciplinary discoveries and interpersonal connections. Lela also uses her voice to bolster youth engagement and advocacy in different communities through storytelling, drawing from her time growing up in Hawaii, and exploring the reefs through SCUBA diving.
