Rising Tides Newsletter - December 2022
Dear CMS Colleagues,

As we all know, the demands of our research are 24/7/365. They do not stop just because the holidays roll around. My wish for you is that you find and savor well-deserved moments of peace, comfort, and joy in the inevitable frenzy of it all. Know how much I appreciate you and your hard work, which make the USF College of Marine Science the special place that it is.

In celebration of the season, please enjoy this snapshot of peace on Earth in Antarctica (above) -- taken recently by graduate student Carlyn Scott, who has been working on a krill project in Palmer Station since September. Several more of our students are heading to, or soon to return from Antarctica, so we thought this photograph a fitting choice.

Sincerely,

Tom
How CMS responded to Hurricane Ian
The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is behind us, but its impact will be felt in Florida for years to come. On September 28, Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida. Enjoy some snapshots of CMS-led research in response to the storm.
Fjords: small-but-mighty planetary “thermostats”
If you’re worried about escalating human-induced climate change, consider adding fjords to your thank-you list during this season of gratitude. Brad Rosenheim’s laboratory was instrumental in this new study in Nature Geosciences.
USF-led team detects toxic “forever chemicals,” or PFAS in Tampa Bay fish and sediments
The results from this baseline study, reported in Frontiers in Marine Science, suggest cause for concern. The work was led by Erin Pulster (formerly a part of Steve Murawski’s lab).
Join an expedition without stepping foot on the ship
Enjoy more about marine geochemist Lise Artigue’s cruise, which involved several members of Kristen Buck’s CMS lab.
Honoring William “Bill” Hogarth, 1939-2022
We hope you enjoy this tribute to a legend, Bill Hogarth, who was an endeared member of our CMS family.

  • Congrats to grad student Hannah Hunt, who led this study about iron isotypes.

  • Congrats to graduate student Luis Sorinas Morales, who has been selected by SECOORA for the 2022 Vembu Subramanian Ocean Scholars Award.
