CMS in the News
Our dean and faculty were interviewed recently for their expertise in oil spills, hurricanes, seaweed, red tides, sea level rise, and more. One favorite mention was an opinion piece by the Ocean Conservancy’s JP Brooker: “With the former Chief Science Officer of Florida Tom Frazer at the helm at the College of Marine Science, the Flood Hub is certain to be a resilience science powerhouse.”
New insights about bacteria and viruses in Manatee Springs
Most people visit Manatee Springs to see its charismatic megafauna, from the iconic sea cows that are its namesake to gators and majestic great blue herons. But not Kema Malki.
USF CMS joins Ocean Visions Network
One key focus area for Ocean Visions is to build coastal resiliency, which aligns well with research priorities at the CMS, said dean Tom Frazer.
NOAA’s largest 5-year investment to fight climate crisis
The goal of the project, co-led by Nancy Williams, is to develop an easy-to-use, consistent biogeochemical float dataset that can help improve climate models, better inform health management strategies, and more.

Tampa Bay is one of the three watersheds that will be studied in this project.
Full STEAM ahead!
The St. Petersburg Science Festival is virtual again this year and starts tomorrow. Guardians of the Gulf, marine virus hunters, and more!

  • Alum Michelle Guitard from Amelia Shevenell’s lab was one of four recipients for the 2021 Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Award. More on this coming soon!
  • Congrats, Naja Murphy, grad student in Kristen Buck’s lab, who got honorable mention for the 2021 Ford Foundation Fellowship.
  • Congrats to 3 members of Bob Byrnes’ lab, who are nearly ready to wrap a 42-day cruise to study ocean acidification in the Gulf.
  • Congrats, Steve Murawski, who traces the milestones of his nearly 50-year-long career in ocean science and offers invaluable advice for early career scientists in this story in the ICES Journal of Marine Science.
