Rising Tides Newsletter - October 2024

Dear CMS Community,

My heart goes out to everyone impacted by hurricanes Helene and Milton.

As we continue to recover from these back-to-back storms, I want to express my sincere gratitude for our community. Many members of our extended family at CMS have been deeply affected, and you have shown remarkable kindness, compassion, and resilience despite the challenges we’ve faced. I thank you all for your patience and commitment to helping one another during this difficult time.

I want to also extend my appreciation to the campus police and facilities team, who were quick to help secure and clean up our campus after the storm, as well as the research groups at CMS that monitored ocean conditions as the storms approached land. That includes the Ocean Technology Group, which had a glider stationed in the paths of the hurricanes, and the Ocean Circulation Lab, which provided sea level predictions for the west coast of Florida. I have no doubt that your efforts helped improve forecasts and better prepared communities for the storm.

We are continuing to compile a list of students, faculty, and staff who have been heavily impacted by Helene and Milton so that we can direct aid their way. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you are in need of assistance. Meanwhile, USF maintains an FAQ page where you can follow updates, find resources, and learn how you can help others in need.

All the best,

Tom Frazer

CMS doctoral candidates Natalia López Figueroa and Michael Schram founded the ESA coastal and marine ecology section to foster a space for marine scientists to present their research.

Inspired by the USF in London alumni and student dinner this June, USF College of Marine Science alum and renowned shipwreck hunter David Mearns has generously offered to match contributions up to $2,500 to help endow the USF Study Abroad Scholarship Fund. USF study abroad students and alumni in London were eager to engage with Mr. Mearns throughout the evening!

This endowment will ensure that more USF students can embark on life-changing global experiences every year. With current scholarships meeting only 10% of the demand, your support is more crucial than ever.

Contribute here and help us make twice the difference!
