Serving the risk management community

Our office was well represented at two national risk management conferences earlier this month. At the 53rd annual University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) conference, director Susie Johnson was installed as a member of the board of directors and international risk manager Shaun Jamieson co-presented a session entitled, "Three Sides of the Same Coin: Building an International Risk Management Program by Engaging Risk Management, International Travelers, and Insurance Collaboratively."

URMIA is an international community of almost 2,700 members from 550 institutions of higher learning and more than 100 affiliate companies and partner organizations that serve the needs of higher education risk management.

Brandy Cunningham served as co-chair of this year's Higher Education Protection Network (HEPNet) conference, which partnered with URMIA this year to offer shared learning opportunities. HEPNet represents about 200 individual higher education and affiliate members at 127 institutions and promotes practices to protect children and youth and provide appropriate programming and resources.

Congratulations to Brandy Cunningham on receiving the 2022 Committee Member of the Year award from the Higher Education Protection Network (HEPNet). Individuals were nominated by committee members, committee chairs, and HEPNet board members, and the winner was selected based on going above and beyond in committee service, exemplary acts of service, and leadership among peers.

Brandy's nominator noted in part that she "has been instrumental to the success of past conferences, jumped in during the unknowns of 2020 and brought many new ideas to the table, is insanely organized, always has new ideas and is willing to take on the work to try them."

Kurt Beyer
Senior risk and systems analyst

What I do:

I work with students, faculty, and staff regarding the success of their events and programs on and off campus, and provide general risk consultation to anyone who comes calling! I manage the event authorization process for departments and third parties who plan campus events, and am a part of the approval process for student organization events as well. I help manage the alcohol licenses ISU holds for campus operations and events, and I manage the ISU event food safety course "SafeFood 101." I also administer the technical side of the ISU incident reporting portal used to report campus incidents, injuries, and vehicle accidents.

What I want you to know:

Contact the Office of Risk Management if you need anything! We work to provide excellent customer service and assist our campus partners to achieve their goals and objectives. No question is too crazy, no situation is too mundane, and there is no

My favorite things about my work:

I'm going to pick two! I love working with the great staff we have in Risk Management - we're a great team and love to collaborate with the ISU community. Speaking of that, I also love Iowa State and the amazing work our faculty, staff, and students (and student organizations) accomplish every day. All of you do amazing work and keep us all very busy - which is great! See you around!
