Shaun M. Jamieson elected chair of Overseas Security Advisory Council's Academia Sector Committee

Congratulations to Shaun M. Jamieson, international risk manager, on his election to chair of the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) Academia Sector Committee (ASC) Steering Committee.

OSAC is a U.S. Department of State public-private partnership that promotes security cooperation between the U.S. government and American private sector organizations worldwide. The ASC focuses specifically on safety, security, and health issues facing U.S. colleges and universities operating abroad. As chair, Shaun will work closely with the U.S. Department of State and lead ASC efforts to identify and address the security challenges and concerns facing education abroad programs, and to promote best practices and policies that support the safety and security of U.S. education abroad participants.
On Call International visit; program information and incident response exercises valuable

Representatives from Iowa State’s international insurance and assistance company, On Call International, visited campus last month. International risk manager Shaun M. Jamieson coordinated the visit and facilitated an opportunity for study abroad and other international travel stakeholders to learn more about the On Call International program and to get an overview of the insurance coverage, assistance services, and common claims scenarios.

The information session was followed by tabletop exercises that involved international incident scenarios that could impact university travelers. Participants worked through how to manage the incidents and how best to support affected travelers.

In addition, a cross-section of campus leaders and representatives from units responsible for incident management participated in an international crisis response exercise that involved critical incident scenarios that could impact multiple ISU travelers, programs, and assets abroad. Participants evaluated each scenario and developed an incident management response plan.

Shaun noted, “Working through exercises like this helps us prepare to handle these sorts of incidents before they occur. It gives us familiarity with the systems and processes in place to address these situations and establish new ones where needed.”

Staff spotlight: Heather Robinson

Heather joined our team on January 11 as youth and volunteer programs coordinator. She received her bachelor of science in child and family services from Iowa State, and her previous work experience includes roles as academic advisor, financial aid advisor, and social worker.
My role:

I support youth and volunteer program leaders and staff to ensure compliance with ISU policies. I'm able to assist with questions regarding the Cy Check process as well.

What I like best about working for risk management/ISU:

I really enjoy working with campus partners to support them in the wonderful youth and volunteer programs that are offered through Iowa State. It is exciting to see the wide variety of experiences offered at ISU outside the classroom.

Fun facts about me:

  • I enjoy traveling, reading books, going to musical theater shows, and spending time with my family.

  • Prior to coming to the university, I was a social worker. This position allows me to combine my passions for both youth protection and higher education!
