Welcome, Shradha!
Shradha Silori recently joined the risk management team as a international risk student assistant.
Shradha is a senior in global resource systems and environmental studies and is in the University Honors Program. Originally from India, Shradha spent most of her youth in Bangkok, Thailand before coming to Iowa State. While at the university, she has studied abroad in Nepal, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Rome, Italy.

Risk management members attend, present at URMIA
Risk management team members recently attended the annual University Risk Management & Insurance Association (URMIA) conference in New Orleans, LA.
Shaun M. Jamieson, international risk manager, co-presented an educational session on insurance coverage types and limits for international activities. Susie Johnson, risk management director, and Brandy Cunningham, youth and volunteer programs manager, presented a technology session on the efficiency and document retention capabilities of Iowa State's Cy Check system.

Risk managers at HEPNet
The 2024 HEPNet Annual Conference was held in October at University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Brandy Cunningham, youth and volunteer programs manager, co-facilitated the 202 pre-conference session on buy-in, policy, and auditing. Heather Robinson, youth and volunteer programs coordinator, attended virtually, joining over 150 higher education youth protection professionals around the country to discuss risk management issues related to youth programming on college campuses.

New benefit for international travelers - telecounseling service | |
OnCall International, Iowa State's international insurance and assistance carrier, has added a mental health telecounseling service to its roster of benefits.
On Call’s telecounseling service is available through the Global Response Center and instantly connects travelers to a wide range of experienced and credentialed mental health professionals from anywhere in the world - 24/7/365.
Telecounselors can provide short-duration counseling support or be a 24/7 resource for crisis intervention. While they should not be contacted in lieu of first responders in a true emergency,
the counselors are trained to de-escalate during an initial call and perform an assessment as
to whether a person requires a higher level of care.

Jamieson organizes, attends OSAC committee safety and security seminar
Shaun M. Jamieson, Iowa State international risk manager and chair of the OSAC Academia Sector Committee (ASC), organized and attended the OSAC ASC Health, Safety, and Security fall seminar in Oaxaca, Mexico. As part of the program, approximately twenty attendees from U.S. universities met with U.S. Embassy staff in Mexico City prior to the event to discuss safety and security of U.S. students in Mexico.
OSAC is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) and security professionals from U.S. organizations operating abroad.

Loss control visit
Loss control representatives from Iowa State's master property carrier, Travelers, recently were on campus for their annual loss control visit. Representatives from Risk Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Planning and Management, and the Power Plant participated. Travelers toured the Power Plant, Kent Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex, Jack Trice Stadium, Coover Hall, Marston Hall, and Pearson Hall. The purpose of this value-added service is to identify potential loss-producing conditions and provide loss-prevention recommendations to reduce the frequency and severity of losses. Risk management works with campus partners to address and implement Travelers' post-inspection recommendations.

The risk management team recently had the opportunity to tour Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute facilities. Director Erin Norton shared about the institute's role in research, education, outreach and laboratory services throughout Iowa and the Midwest.

How are motor vehicle accident damages paid? Through the Iowa Regents Motor Vehicle Self-Insurance Program (MVLP). The MVLP is a self-insurance fund (Fund) initiated in July 1986 by the Board of Regents to replace commercial motor vehicle liability insurance.
Regents institutions pay a monthly premium per vehicle to the MVLP Fund Administrator. Iowa State risk management requests claim reimbursement on a quarterly basis from the Fund for repair costs incurred by the university. The Fund pays for physical damage to Regent institution vehicles, motor vehicle tort claims, and fund expenses, and establishes reserves for unpaid liabilities.
