Youth programs team at HEPNet
Heather Robinson, youth and volunteer programs coordinator, and Brandy Cunningham, youth and volunteer programs manager, recently attended the 2025 HEPNet Annual Conference at University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Brandy co-facilitated the 202 pre-conference session focusing on compliance, upskilling staff, and recognizing success. She was also a speaker for three conference sessions. Heather and Brandy joined over 170 higher education youth protection professionals from around the country to discuss the unique risk management issues related to youth programming on college campuses.

Risk management staff attend URMIA
Staff recently attended the 56th University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) Annual Conference both virtually and in Las Vegas, NV. Along with opportunities for team members to learn about emerging risk management issues, benchmark with peers, discuss best practices, and network, director Susie Johnson was recognized for her significant contributions as a board member and current president-elect of the organization's board of directors. She also received the 2025 Jenny Whittington Excellence in Volunteering award.

Susie Johnson receives URMIA volunteer award
Risk management director and URMIA president-elect Susie Johnson recently was honored with the 2025 Jenny Whittington Excellence in Volunteering award.
The award is presented to URMIA members who go above and beyond in their volunteer service and/or leadership within URMIA and who have promoted the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
According to a statement provided by URMIA, "Johnson exemplifies what it is to be a volunteer and an incredible supporter of URMIA. Whether online or in-person, she is volunteering in roles that address the needs of the association – responding to online community posts sharing her knowledge and experiences and serving as a speaker and moderator at various URMIA events. Susie led a task force developing pathways to facilitate members’ connections to professional development and educational resources. She has served on the association’s board of directors since 2022 and was elected president-elect in July, starting her own pathway to serve as URMIA’s president 2026-2027. Whenever URMIA is needing assistance, Johnson is one of the first to ask how she can help."

New SafeFood 101 course available
The 2025-2026 SafeFood 101 course is now available in Cy Check.
Each person who will prepare or serve food for an Iowa State event must take and pass the course before the event. The course must be completed annually. It may be taken at any time of the year and is valid until August 1, 2026.
SafeFood 101 is not required for handling prepackaged items (wrapped candy, bottled water, bags of chips, etc.). Anyone with current ServSafe certification is automatically approved to serve food for an event on campus for the current academic year without completing SafeFood 101 training.

Big 12 business officers and campus partners meet
Director Susie Johnson and insurance and claims manager Cally Jennett recently represented risk management at the 2025 Big 12 Business Officers and Campus Partners Meeting. The annual event provides opportunities for networking and to discuss current topics and common challenges across peer institutions. Iowa State last hosted the annual meeting in 2013.
