Underage Drinking

a problem or rite of passage?

As parents and caregivers, we want to do all that we can to protect our children, and we worry about what alcohol may do to their health and well-being. In this guide, we break down the risks of youth drinking, why it appeals to youth and what you can do to protect your child from its harms.

You are your child’s greatest influence and health advocate. So, whether your child has not yet tried alcohol, has begun to drink or drinks regularly, we’re here to help.

young people aged 12-20 reported drinking alcohol in 2019.1

Most adults with an alcohol abuse disorder started drinking in their teens!

Binge Drinking is a huge problem especially in the college years!

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says overall teen alcohol use is down. About one in three kids drinks. However the CDC found 60 percent of those teenagers that do drink are binge-drinking, where guys consume five or more drinks in a two-hour span. The number is four or more drinks for women. This can result in emergency room visits or in some cases death. Calling 911 is paramount and young people need to understand that calling 911 will not cause them to be in trouble!! The Good Samaritan Law covers anyone trying to save a life.

JUST WHY IS UNDERAGE DRINKING DANGEROUS

Communities can make a difference when they are educated, engaged and care!!

Remember parents who host an event where alcohol is served to underage young people stand to loose the most. Be the role model!!
