Below is our River Forest Township June News and our programming with the library (yellow section) as well as some other useful information. If you have any questions about anything, please reach out to me by responding to this email or by calling 708-366-2029 x 13.


Township Programming in Our Community:

  • June 2 from 10:00 -11:00 a.m., Coffee Monday with Brian Wolowitz, the Adult Librarian. He will provide a summer book review at the River Forest Library (735 Lathrop Ave.)


Township Programming at River Forest Community Center

(8020 Madison St.):

  • Tuesdays from 3:00-5:00 p.m.: Beginning Chess in room 202 at River Forest Community Center. (this month 6/3,6/10 and 6/24)


  • Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 p.m.: Mahjong in room 202 at the River Forest Community Center.


  • June 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (every 2nd Friday) Benefit Counselor, Ericka Watson will be available in the River Forest Township office. Schedule your appointment at 708-383-8060. Benefits Counselors can help older adults and persons with disabilities apply for many programs, including Medicaid, SNAP, and license plate discounts if you are income eligible. Learn more here. When making your appointment, make sure you ask what documents you need to bring.


  • June 27 (last Friday of the month): SHIP Counselors will be at the River Forest Township office. Please call 708-383-8060 to schedule an appointment. They will not come if they don't have appointments scheduled in advance. Learn more about SHIP

River Forest Events in the Community and more:

June 2 at 6:00 pm: River Forest Pride and Inclusion Walk (starting at River Forest Village Hall (400 Park Ave.) walk down Park Ave. and end up at Keystone Park for a Celebration. Come to this free kickoff event for a month long remembrance of Stonewall.


June 18 from 4:00- 6:00 pm: Juneteenth Flag Raising Celebration at River Forest Library. (735 Lathrop Ave.) Come honor this special day in our history.


Other Township information:

The Township has openings on the Senior & Disability Services Committee. The Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Township Board of Trustees. Members of the Senior Committee are appointed by the River Forest Township Board of Trustees to three-year terms. Click here for more information. There is a School Supply Drive taking place now through August 1. Please donate: folders, rulers, scissors, notebooks, crayons, sharpies, pencils, highlighters, erasers, glues and backpacks are needed. Drop off locations are at either of the Township Offices or the River Forest Library.

North West Housing Partnership, our partner for the Home Repair and CAPABLE/ OAHMP programs, is able to help you age in place or stay in your home longer. Programs are for older adults of all income levels.


Oak Park and River Forest Township Senior Services is seeking volunteers for Meal Delivery. June 2 from 10:00 -11:00 a.m., Coffee Monday with Adult Librarian, Brian Wolowitz. He will offer a preview of new books coming out this summer.


June 12 from 7:00- 8:30 pm: Craft and Chat: Create a Matisse-inspired watercolor painting in a guided class led by an instructor from local art studio Slowfire. Register here. (there is a waiting list- Craft and Chat programs fill up quickly)


June 14 from 2:00-3:00 pm: Meditation Soundbath. Register here.



June 20 from 1:00-3:30 pm: Film Lover Fridays presents Leave Her to Heaven starring Gene Tierney. Snacks will be served and local film expert Jim Jacob will be on hand for discussion afterwards.


June 21 from 2:00 - 3:30 pm: Monet Lives: A Portrayal of Claude Monet. Actor and artist Jim Parks, the former host of HGTV's "New Spaces," brings art history to life.

June 7 from 2:00- 4:00 p.m.: Watch the Oscar Nominees (May - August) This month: A Complete Unknown.


June 26 from 7:00- 8:00 pm: Summer Concert Series: Donna Herula Blues Trio. Celebrate summer with an outdoor concert. Music is delta blues and traditional Chicago blues.



Note: The Library also has book clubs if you are interested (as does Oak Park Township as well as the Life Long Learning program through the Park District of Oak Park) Don't forget you can borrow a "hotspot" from your local library, so you can get access to wifi when needed. (i.e. if you are traveling or don't have wifi at home this will give you access). Call your library for more information.

June 4 and 18 from 9:00 - 10:00 am: Senior Fitness Walks in Thatcher Woods: Join other seniors for a moderately paced, one mile fitness walks in beautiful Thatcher Woods. Led by senior Roberta Jannsen, Univ. of IL Extension volunteer. Call Trailside Museum of Natural History at 708-366-6530. (walks are every 1st and 3rd W)


June 5: The first Thursday Night Out of the season in Oak Park (on Marion St., off Lake, heading south). Learn more here.


June 6 from 8:00 -11:00 p.m.: Every First Friday at Bobby's Eastside (part of Robert's Westside on Circle and Madison, Forest Park) Come to "Find Your People" This month is a Pridefest After Party. A new community driven monthly event encouraging dancing, building friendships and creating lifelong memories. All ages welcome. DJ Lovebug will be spinning music from the 80's and 90's. Come for dancing, cocktails and community.


June 9 from from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m: The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association presents their summer film series. Call 708-386-2729 for details.


June 26 from 1:00- 3:00 pm: Arbor West Neighbors presents Societal and Cultural Attitudes About Aging. Jim Vanden Bosch will be the presenter, a filmmaker and founder and Executive Director of Terra Nova Films, a not-for-profit company specializing in producing and distributing videos on a wide variety of issues related to elderhood and aging. Every Monday:

6:30-8:00 p.m.: The Oak Park Meditation Group meets in person at the Oak Park Public Library "Maze Branch the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month and on Zoom the other Mondays. It is open to all who want to learn and practice meditation together. Each session begins with a brief warm-up drawn from yoga or qigong, followed by meditation instruction, sitting and walking meditation, reading and discussion. Every Tuesday:

9:00-12:00 p.m.: Senior Club at Mohr Center

Every 4th Tuesday of the Month:

Age Options hosts online events for LGBTQ+ Older Adults and those who care for them. Call (800) 699-9043 for more information, go to their website here or to sign up here.


Every Wednesday:

10:30-11:30 a.m.: Free Zumba Gold at the Roos Center in Forest Park through Rush Oak Park Hospital and Park District of Forest Park. For more information, click here. (Call number on website)

Every 1st Saturday:

Reimagining Justice: Can Restorative Justice Replace Punishment? Watch Unity Temple’s powerful Reimagining Justice Video with community leaders (held on March 1, 2025) There should be 4 or 5 parts.
