Chamber Day at the Capitol Recap - Bob Ruhland
Last Thursday, April 3rd we had The Minnesota Chamber Day at the Capitol. Thank you to all the River Heights chamber members who attended.
This year’s event had House Speaker Lisa Demuth providing a legislative outlook for the end of session. Speaker Demuth highlighted bipartisan support being required to enact a sustainable balanced budget while touching on several of the large focus area including, fraud, taxes and federal government uncertainty.
This was followed by a panel discussion on the state budget by Representatives Zach Stephenson and Paul Torkelson. The morning ended with a Panel on Fraud in state government by Representative Kristin Robbins and Senator Michael Kreun. Legitimate program needs are often woven into fraudulent practices which makes rolling back fraud very time consuming and slow.
After the morning’s panels, we had the opportunity to meet with Representative Mary Frances Clardy and Representative Rick Hansen. Conversations centered around the Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) mandate, property tax increases and better materials to educate businesses on the changing legal landscape. The River heights Chamber will continue to look for opportunities to help inform and educate the business community.
The first educational event that deals with PFML will be hosted by the Dakota County Regional Chamber at Lost Spur Country Club in Eagan on April 23 from 8:30 – 10:00am. See the following for more details and registration.

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Minnesota Paid Leave will provide payments and job protections to Minnesotans when they need time off for some of life’s most important moments – like welcoming a child, recovering from a serious illness, or caring for a loved one. As an employer, you play an important role in helping your employees learn about and access the program.
Minnesota Paid Leave staff are partnering with local chambers of commerce for a series of in-person engagement sessions for employers. At these sessions, we will provide an overview of the program, share recent updates, answer your questions, and help you prepare to meet your responsibilities under Paid Leave. Light refreshments will be served.
