NEXT GENERAL MEETING
August 9th
Meeting starts at 7:30 PM
Ridgefield Park Elks Lodge
21 Cedar St
Ridgefield Park, NJ
|
TOPIC: NJ's beach replenishment by the Army Corps of Engineers
SPEAKER: Ross Kushner
BIO: As the former director of a watershed protection group in northern New Jersey Ross is familiar with conservation issues and campaigns. As an avid saltwater angler and surfer, the health of the ocean and coastline is important to him.
SUMMARY: The Army Corps of Engineers beach replenishment projects have caused great damage to marine ecosystems, and created dangerous conditions for anglers, swimmers, surfers, and other beachgoers. Over several decades these projects have piled almost 130 million cubic yards of sand on the NJ beaches. Migratory species like striped bass, following the coast on their way to the Hudson River, are deeply impacted by the devastation of ocean life.
A number of organizations, including HRFA, have banded together to form the New Jersey Coastal Alliance in opposition to these coastal projects. Kushner’s presentation will cover this joint opposition, why it is so necessary, and how HRFA and its members can help.

Why Donate?
- The HRFA was arguably the first and most successful group to find polluters of the Hudson River and hold them accountable. We continue our mission to "Fight for the Hudson" to this very day.
- The HRFA is a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization. You need another charitable tax deduction don't you?
- All of our members are volunteers. No member of the Elected Board of Directors earns an income for all their hard work. Every penny donated goes to support our programs.
- Our Youth Angler Program continues to gets kids "Hooked on fishing, not on drugs." Help support us so that we can give America's veterans opportunities to go fishing too.
- Let us continue to offer scholarships for worthy college-bound high schoolers.
- Support the restoration of the world's first Riverkeeper vessel so it may take its rightful place in history. Perhaps, in a museum on the Hudson River; the river it protected for decades before its decommissioning.
- Help us realize our dream of having our own museum and meeting place in the Palisades Interstate Park. A beautiful historic place, one that can be shared with the public to enjoy as well.
- Shall we continue?

Greetings HRFA Members and Friends,
I hope that as of this writing, we find you all well and enjoying the fishing opportunities of the pre-COVID-19 Pandemic. I am happy to hear that our members are enjoying the fishing challenges and appreciating the rewards.
As to our events, we are exceeding the pre-Pandemic levels.
The BASS fishing contest, organized by Alex Spindelman is over. Thank you to the participants and congratulations to the winners, reported below. The fluke season is on and many of our members are using their skills to catch that “Floormat”, both from boat and from the shoreline.
On the personal note, I had one of my more memorable fishing days, landing a Bluefin Tuna, 66” approximately 150 Lbs. in collaboration with Jerry Crean. This was another successful trip thanks to Dirk Van Everdingen, on the XTC Sportfishing vessel with Captain Scott.

On Friday, 19th of August, we will hold our second inter-club HRFA Invitational fishing challenge. It will be against the Saltwater Anglers of Bergen County. We are looking forward to this social interaction and friendly competition.
We were happy to support Hoboken's City of Water Day & the Fund for Better Waterfront. Participating HRFA volunteers familiarized participants with our activities (Joe Albanese, Janice Soto & Dave Mercer), as well as conducted the fishing clinic, (Miguel and Noah Sardinas, Wayne Geider, Tony DiModugno, Arnie Ulrich & Edward Delapp).
At the HRFA board meetings, we are reviewing our plans and strategies. As always, we appreciated your suggestions for meeting topics and fishing events. We have been discussing the status of our volunteers. We are in an increased need for dedicated members to participate and take lead in our activities. Sadly, we have lost some of the most reliable, and others like me, are getting up in age. We appeal to our general membership to step-up and help.
Reviewing our current financial status, we came to realization that the HRFA funding is in need. We appreciate the donations, and fund-raising efforts, but to help support the numerous commitments and programs we have to consider increasing the membership dues. At the last General Membership meeting we presented the
suggested membership dues of $35, $40 or $45, for consideration and feedback. We will be finalizing and deciding at the upcoming HRFA Board meeting. Please note that the HRFA dues have not changed for over 30 years.
Regretfully, the Outdoors/Sportsmen Show that scheduled for this month was canceled. However, we are looking for volunteers and a chair position for the upcoming events in 2023.
We have successfully initiated the HRFA Fishing Clinics as part of the Youth Angler Program. Please look for the scheduling for when you can participate. We are receiving invitations to participate in Youth Fishing Programs & Clinics from our friends and organizations. As the schedules are confirmed, we will be reaching out for volunteers. Look for schedule in the newsletter.

Also, I would like to remind those members, especially the recipients of the HRFA prestigious “Pete Barrett” award, that is expect from them to continue their efforts and
contribution, to the best of their abilities. We are charitable organization, we provide our services to many, and we expect our members to participate and support us, accordingly. As always, we thank all our members and friends for your help and appreciate your donations.

General Monthly Meeting
November 8, 2022
|
BLURB: Less than an hour by train from New York City, Croton Point Park encapsulates the history, beauty and promise of the Hudson Valley. The Westchester County Park encompasses miles of Hudson River shoreline with astonishing views and remnants of the region's past. Incredible shell mounds shed light on the Native peoples who inhabited the area generations prior to European colonization. The remains of the first commercial vineyards in the Northeast are just steps away from historic brickyards that helped build Manhattan. The Point served as a dumping ground for years until local efforts restored the park into a model of environmental conservation. Today, bald eagles have returned to nest alongside visitors exploring remarkable landmarks, sailing the waters of the Hudson or enjoying a scenic picnic.
|
ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Scott Craven is a former Ossining police captain whose master's thesis focused on an environmental history of the area. As the historian of the Town of Ossining and an avid fisherman, paddler and cyclist, he knows the Point better than most. Over the years, he has naturally connected with many people whose passion and expertise regarding different aspects of the Point have helped us weave its history into a compelling story.
Caroline Ranald Curvan is professional researcher and writer. She recently led the research team for a critically acclaimed American Masters/PBS documentary entitled Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page. A writer with popular local blog (OssiningHistoryontheRun.com) and an adjunct professor of research and composition, she is a deep and passionate student of history.

Fresh Water Bass Derby
June 18 to July 9, 2022
|
|
"The HRFA Bass Derby finished up in July with 18 anglers fishing for their biggest 5 bass limit. Scott Havner was able to put up over 90 inches in the 1st week and never looked back. He also caught the biggest bass of the derby, a 19.5'' smallmouth. 2nd and 3rd were highly contested but Matt Rivera (2nd) and Joe Duemmer (3rd) edged out Llyod Castillo and Richard Duemmer at the end. Overall, eight 5 bass limits on the leaderboard with 5 fish breaking the 19 inch mark. It was a great derby and we look forward to our next Derby on August 20th, the Catfish Chaos Derby." - Alex Spindelman, Derby Organizer
|
|
|
On the last day of the Derby Scott, Stephanie and Linda tried to better their scores but all they kept catching were these pesky walleye. A nice problem to have.

The dynamic fishing duo, minus one, spoke about angling for all the "other" game fishes of the Hudson River. Unfortunately, Scott Havner was called in to work but Andrew Ward did a swell job entertaining and educating the audience about the many varied angling opportunities available in the Hudson River. Andy is also a wonderful photographer and he donated a couple of his works to perhaps the club's youngest members - Sarah & her big brother Noah Sardinas.

City of Water Day
July 16, 2022
|
City of Water Day is an annual event along the Hoboken waterfront. This year Fund for a Better Waterfront invited The HRFA to be a part of Water Day. FBW was founded on the belief that the Hudson River waterfront belongs to the people. We share that belief.
|
|
|
The day was full of activities, hands-on environmental science with Resilience Adventures, Tours of the Hoboken waterfront with Ron Hine, kayaking or stand-up paddle-boarding with the Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse, and of course, fishing.
The HRFA held a fishing clinic off the Castle Point fishing pier (just south of the Union Dry Dock site). Dozens of Hoboken residents showed up to fish. The majority were first-timers. The HRFA had rods, bait, and members ready to assist those that wanted to wet a line. I am sure that those that attended are now Hooked on the Hudson. In the end, it was a fantastic event and a great time along the river, and looking forward to next year’s City of Water Day event.
Special thanks to Arnie Ulrich, Edward Delapp, Tony DiModugno, Wayne Geider, Joe Albanese, Dave Mercer, and Janice Soto. Your dedication as a volunteer is an inspiration to others.

"I was lucky enough to receive notice of a recapture of one of my tags by the ALS. The striper was caught and tagged 5/1/22 on the Hackensack River at 26.5” and recaptured from the Cape Cod Canal on 6/5/22 - a nice trip for a little fish. It seems to me that the ALS is working hard cataloging the tagging program. I’ve been involved with two other tags. I caught one ALS tagged striper from a central NJ location and the other from the mid Hudson River. Great to see these programs working." - Dirk VanEverdingen
NOTE: This is the second reported recapture of a striper tagged during our Fred Rung Memorial Striped Bass Catch, Tag & Release Derby. Last year Keith Baez tagged a striper in the Hudson River and it too found its way to the Cape in one month's time where it was recaptured. The ALS letter to Dirk says the angler who caught the bass released it. That means, if it gets caught again, it could provide additional info for science. For a fish that's a purpose full life. - The Editor
|
|
|
Arnie remembers catching that tagged fish:
"I was fishing the end of the outgoing tide with fellow HRFA members Al White, Wayne Geider and Barry Davis aboard Al's "Sparky". I was drifting a chrome ball jig with spearing under the bridge when I caught this 19.5" fluke. Isn't it amazing that the fish grew 3 inches in one year!
It was a productive area with 4 or 5 boats all hooking up. We caught 5 keepers with many throwbacks. The largest being 25" but I forget who caught that one. I filleted all the keepers.
Btw, did you know that the commercial guys are allowed to keep fluke as small as 14-inches? The "flounder" you see in fish markets are actually fluke."

Fishing Adventures with Abigail
by Carl Bruger
|
|
Encounter a six year old girl who has never fished before and has an intense desire to catch her first fish. Combine her exuberant enthusiasm with an old coot who Gil Hawkins dubbed “The Johnny Appleseed of getting kids to fish.” (Me). What do you have? The perfect storm of kid’s angling nirvana.
A dear friend, Ruth, from my wife, Pat’s long ago Girl Scout days came to visit us at our Lake Ontario home with her youngest six year old granddaughter, Abigail. From the onset she vociferously and pleadingly asked to go fishing as the most important aspect and goal of her brief three day visit. Was old man Bruger ever prepared! I gifted her with a new pink pushbutton spin cast reel matched with an appropriate balanced two piece spin cast rod.
Abigail turned out to be a quick learner combining excitement, excellent coordination and
remarkable patience as she absorbed the rudiments of casting a line. Within three practice casts she was already tossing the worm baited hook line and sinker in the general direction straight away from our pontoon boat.
The first day was challenging fishing as strong winds hindered all of our casts and tangled the dangling lines enough to frustrate anyone. She still managed to catch a white perch for her first fish ever and then reeled in a fat yellow perch that I’d hooked on a Mepps spinner with my rod. A few mini sized fish were also released as was my anchor which lodged itself in an immovable shelf rock. The arctic tern that grabbed the wounded release was an added birding bonus.
Abigail handled the worms with nonchalance and watched with curiosity, focus and glee as I cleaned and filleted what she was excited to eventually eat for her first self-caught fish dinner. She even fed the turtles with the entrails and was totally indifferent to the blood and slime on her hands, washing them in lake water like a deft little surgeon after an operation.
Her enjoyed recipe that resulted in a clean plate and desire for next nights’ meal consisted of drenching the fillets in whipped egg, dipped them into Japanese Panko crumbs, and frying the fish in canola oil. Simple condiments included Old Bay, onion powder and pepper. The golden brown crispy result vanished quickly.
|
|
Our second repast was a better repeat of the first night as we caught a dozen keepers up to a foot long and provided plenty of white perch to journey home for future meals. The five of us relished every bite of perch, homemade French fries and fresh corn on the cob.
Added adventure occurred overnight when we baited my large Ugly stick spinning rods with perch heads to catch potentially huge channel cats. To our chagrin the cats were coy and did not bite. Abigail still had the thrill of hauling in two large catches. The first night yielded a five pound bowfin that swallowed the bait and the next evening saw her crank in a monster snapping turtle with my help that weighed over 25 pounds and filled the bottom of my salmon net. Some of the catches can be seen in the accompanying pictures.
Abigail, the ardent angler, went home with a shore rock fern fossil, several bags of perch fillets, plenty of cell phone photos enough to fill a mini album, and hopefully fond memories of “getting hooked on fishing” for the rest of her life. She planned on going to her lake based day camp the next day to show off her gear and maybe catch some fish there. This old scribe
never the less may have had more fun than she did!
If you really enjoyed this article as much as I did penning it, seriously consider doing your part to involve young people in youth angling, It’s even better if a young child in your family or a close friends has a yen to fish. There are millions of potential neophyte fishermen and women out there that are waiting for folks like you to teach them. Maybe volunteer with Wayne Geider and the HRFA Youth Anglers for starters. We need a next generation of enthusiastic anglers because if we don’t, PETA types will certainly be brainwashing more
children to eschew the fishing opportunity.
Get those kids away from the #@%$ing computer video games and take them into the glorious God given outdoors! - CB

Greenwood Lake Public Launch Ramp S987/A1047
|
|
Contact Your NJ State Legislator
|
Your NJ tax dollars go to stock fish and other programs to support Greenwood Lake and yet there are precious few spots accessible to the general public to fish. Perhaps we can force change by supporting the bills that would at least create a public boat launch. Let's all get on this!! Your email or phone to the NJ Legislature call might go something like this ...
|
Name and Title of person you're sending this to.
I hope I can count on your sponsorship, support and endorsement of S 987 or A 1047. Public areas need to have public access for all to enjoy, not just a select few.
Thanks for you consideration and I look forward to hearing your position on this.

HRFA Members stuff
HRFA Welcomes new Member Paul Tinghino from Brick NJ.

What is HRFA Free Money? Are you a paid member.?
At every HRFA in person meeting, half of the HRFA portion of the 50/50 money goes into a virtual jar. At the end of the meeting, a paid HRFA members name is picked (from a jar of all paid HRFA members) to receive the money. The name is announced three times. If the HRFA paid member is not present, the money goes back into the jar for the next months meeting. The process continues and is repeated at the next HRFA meeting.
HRFA Free money (split 50/50) for the July 12th HRFA meeting was $113.00. From the bucket of HRFA paid members, a name was picked at by member Sarah Sardinas.
The HRFA paid member picked from the bucket by Sarah Sardinas was Meadows Ryan, and was announced to all present three times. Member Meadows Ryan was not there, so the HRFA free money goes back into the bucket. Note: Treasurer holds the HRFA free money.
Will you be there at the August 2022 HRFA meeting to collect the HRFA free money?

HRFA Membership Information. If you dont have a 2022 or lifetime member card you are losing out on great HRFA member benifits.
Pay your dues. Get your 2022 membership card.
The generous grace period ended for renewals on March 31st. Those not renewed are on the stale list and are removed from the membership rolls. Note , If you do not have a 2022 or life time membership card , you are not a HRFA member.
For those people who join(ed) the HRFA in October (or later) of a given year, their new or renewal membership also is covered for the following new year. There is also a generous grace period (3 months) for those who are unable to update their membership in January, however paying your dues late puts a strain on the records maintenance and consequently the ability of the executive board’s planning of activities and events.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or want to help (time, skills, or financially) on any particular club projects or events, feel free to email me, Arnie Ulrich ([email protected]) or call me at 1-201-304-4691.

Got tuna? The XTC Sportfishing 6-pack charter headed offshore from Shark River with a full complement of HRFA members. President Aram Setian, Joe Marchese, Dirk VanEverdingen, Jerry Crean, Mike Mitt & the club's newest member Paul Thinghino did well on the July 27 trip.
There is enough red in the some of the photos to make even Quentin Tarantino proud. Rest assured nothing went to waste. The gang is going to eat well.

From Fish to Dish

Last month I mentioned two dishes without providing recipes. So, here are my wife Michele's Manhattan Clam Chowder (from www.simplyrecipes.com) and Joe Albanese's Drunken Clams recipes (from www.justapinch.com). Joe said he first had a version this dish at Tommy's Tavern in Sea Bright with a beer, or two, and fell in love with it.

Fresh or Canned Clams? Use Either in This Manhattan Clam ...
According to food historian and blogger Janet Clarkson, the very first printed recipe for chowder appeared in the Boston Evening Post in 1751. Written as a poem, it described a stew with onions, pork, fish, herbs, and biscuits (hardtack, I think).
