Meeting ID: 854 0408 5831
Passcode: 454800
GUEST SPEAKER: Michele Kohler

BRIEF BIO: Michele was born in Spring Lake NJ and currently lives in Wall Township. She is a Member of the Berkeley Striper Club, JCAA and Jersey Coast Shark Anglers. Michele also volunteers with HOFNOD and PLAY HOOK-E - an organization that offers fishing clinics, trips for Vets with PTSD and their Families to enjoy as well.

TITLE: Hope and Positivity in a Turbulent Environment

SUMMARY: With so many ideas on “what” to talk about, what stuck out most to me was to just offer HOPE and POSITIVITY for the New Year! Believe me, if you are going on a fishing trip to Alaska it's important to pack a positive attitude! Plans change - and often! My little “Pep Talk" (so to speak) might be a bit “outside the box” of what your Club discusses on a regular basis - however, I think everyone could use positivity and hope in their life!
All are invited to join the meeting
& share their fishing stories.

Why Donate?

  • The HRFA was arguably the first and most successful group to find polluters of the Hudson River and hold them accountable. We continue our mission to "Fight for the Hudson" to this very day.
  • The HRFA is a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization. You need another charitable tax deduction don't you?
  • All of our members are volunteers. No member of the Elected Board of Directors earns an income for all their hard work. Every penny donated goes to support our programs.
  • Our Youth Angler Program continues to get kids "Hooked on fishing, not on drugs." Help support us so that we can give America's veterans opportunities to go fishing too.
  • Let us continue to offer scholarships for worthy college-bound high schoolers.
  • Support the restoration of the world's first Riverkeeper vessel so it may take its rightful place in history. Perhaps, in a museum on the Hudson River; the river it protected for decades before its decommissioning.
  • Help us realize our dream of having our own museum and meeting place in the Palisades Interstate Park. A beautiful historic place, one that can be shared with the public to enjoy as well.
  • Shall we continue?

The Hudson River Fishermen’s Association is a group of recreational fishermen who make active use of the N.Y. Bight and the surrounding water system and are concerned with the present and future state of these fisheries. Our objectives are to encourage the responsible use of aquatic resources and protection of habitat. We assist where possible in efforts to abate pollution and promote sportfishing and the management of that recreation. We are a IRS recognized nonprofit 501c3 organization . All donations are welcome and maybe tax deductable.

From our President
Greetings Gates,

THANK-YOUS
Let me begin by thanking the board and general membership for their December 13th votes of confidence in me and the rest of the proposed slate to lead our esteemed organization for the next three years. See the list on the righthand column of the cover page for your 2023 elected Executive Board Officers and appointed Directors. Thank you to everyone on the list who made a commitment to serve. We wish we had more members like you.

Since its onset, the restrictions imposed on daily life by Covid-19 prevented us from accomplishing everything we wanted to do. Yet, despite the challenges, we did accomplish many things. We never halted our annual Fred Rung Memorial Catch, Tag & Release striper derby, or our Catfish Chaos Derby, and other fishing events. Our Youth Angler Program endured, although with fewer events, and Scholarships were doled out. Last year we saw the return of Hooked on the Hudson Chaired by Pete Musse again. That's just off the top of my head.

Of course we could not have done it without outgoing President Capt. Aram H. Setian's leadership and the help of many volunteers. While Aram's 3-year term was plagued by the pandemic he wrote a template for our Fishing Clinics, updated the HRFA's introductory flyer to hand out at special events, maintained our website, etc. Along with Scott Havner, he also coordinated our annual fishing contest. In his spare time he filled in as recording Secretary for our monthly EBoard meetings! Thank you Aram. This Yuengling's for you.

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.
- John C. Maxwell

Fortunately, I will have a friend and reliable ally as our Vice President, and potentially a succession plan for my end of term. If he wants to do it, Michael Sardinas will make a fantastic President. I am sure he will surround himself with capable allies too.
LONG OVERDUE
We all know the cost of everything continues to rise. Yet, while other organizations increased their annual membership dues long ago, the HRFA remained steadfastly constant at $25 per family for 30+ years. Since the onset of the pandemic we have lost income because the outdoors shows we rely upon to attract new members and supplement revenue from events and annual dues were all cancelled. Plus, there were fewer participants at fund raising events like our Annual Awards Dinner and Striper Derby which meant we barely broke even or finished in the red.

Furthermore, the Elks Lodge informed us that neither they nor us can have any raffles or 50:50s until each organization secures its own permit from the state and town of Ridgefield Park. This we will do.

Driven by these shortfalls, the EBoard voted unanimously to increase membership dues. The difficult part was deciding by how much. The EBoard debated this for months. In the end the majority decided that $40/year per family is reasonable and justifiable given the economy and all we hope to accomplish in the coming years. There will be a modest increase for Lifetime Membership - going from $350 to $400 per family. Hopefully, we will not have to increase dues again for another 30 years.

According to our By-Laws default in payment of dues for more than 30-days after written notice of non-payment will result in suspension of membership. Too much time and expense is wasted every year chasing down delinquent members. Which is unfair for our Membership Chair. So, the board may decide to impose a $10 late fee for those not renewing on time. Don't wait to find out.

Our plans for the money are evolving but for certain we need to buy new fishing rods, reels, etc. to support our Youth Angler Program. The heavy duty rods & reels capable of handling the 3 to 4 ounces of weight used to fish the tidal Hudson River need either major overhaul or outright replacement. We have never, to the best of my knowledge, had combos suitable for freshwater lakes, ponds & reservoirs either. So, that has to change if we want to provide a more enjoyable experience for children, veterans and newbies.

We also need to hire, at least for the short-term, an accountant to: 1.) correlate bank records with ours and 2.) be sure we are doing all that the IRS requires of a 501c3 non-profit organization. We will bring in a new CPA to file our annual tax returns. In today's litigious society it wouldn't hurt to have a lawyer on retainer either. We also want to design and provide tee-shirts and/or hats, free to members who help at our events so people know who we are. Speaking of events, we seriously need to improve our appearance at the outdoors shows. The HRFA booth is antiquated and a bear for volunteers to transport and set up. Also, its costs money to keep it in a storage facility. A smaller one will take up less space and maybe we can stop making those monthly payments.

Stick with us. We think you will see improvements.
The club has basic insurance to cover our events however, we also need to provide liability insurance to protect our Executive Board and Directors who voluntarily serve our club without monetary compensation. (Why do they volunteer? Because they enjoy it and believe in our missions.) This is an expense we never had before but having adequate coverage is prudent.

Speaking of insurance . . .

Our Membership Chair Arnie Ulrich reminded me that in addition to other benefits of membership in the NJ State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs they offer $2 million liability coverage at no additional cost to their members. Membership is $40/year per person.
New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs - Insurance

The NJ State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs (NJSFSC) purchases insurance just as most organizations. Where NJSFSC is different than most other organizations is that our liability coverage includes our members. The NJSFSC purchases a liability...

THE HRFA IS HIRING
If you were at the December 13 meeting/sale then you would have heard and voted on the proposed slate of Executives & Directors for 2023. Since, members present voted in favor of the proposal, and there were no objections, it's a done deal. However, there are unfilled positions available. And we still need a slew of volunteers to keep the club running.

Lucky for us Aram's contributions and dedication to the HRFA will continue into the new year. The passing of Skip Wisniewski was a sad and unexpected loss for family, friends and the HRFA. When called upon Aram graciously agreed to give of his time and talents to pick up the mantel as our new Treasurer. He will also continue too work in the background updating our website https://thehrfa.org as needed. I am truly happy to have him on board.

According to HRFA By-Laws, we still need to draft and then elect two volunteers to fill-in open positions on the Executive Board: 1.) Assistant Treasurer and 2.) Secretary. If you are interested in learning the responsibilities and expectations of these positions please ask a board member.

Basically, we have too few members wearing too many hats. If you are looking to make a difference by volunteering in an organization that can use all the help it can get you may find it a very rewarding experience. Here are some other the other unmet needs:
  • Webmaster to maintain https://thehrfa.org
  • HRFA Tagging Director (potential new opportunity)
  • Apprenticeship as a Committee Chair - Youth Angler Program, Membership, Hooked on the Hudson, Fishing Derbies, Outdoors shows, etc.

V O L _ N T E E R
the only thing missing is U

Compensation is twice that of any board member . . .
$0.oo x 2 = $0.00.

At first I did not think I had much to write about. Now, it seems I can continue to ramble on and on. Instead, let me just conclude this month's letter by wishing everyone a happy, heathy and prosperous new year. Let's make 2023 the best ever for the HRFA. Together we can do it!

never satisfied warrior fishing
Never Satisfied Warrior Fishing provides free fishing trips to our veterans and first responders.
Lessons learned: The Elks Lodge had barely ample room for the tables and traffic of buyers intent on finding a few bargains at our sale event. If we advertise sooner we may outgrow that space. However, there is a bigger space available on the third floor. So, we will advertise next year's event sooner. Also, we will probably start an hour sooner setting things up so there is no confusion when doors open at 6 for 'customers'.

New Year's Resolutions
By Carl Bruger
I hope this River Views finds you, the reader, in good health and already happy after a joyous Christmas or Hanukkah. For those of us who believe in striving for a better future by planning, exploring possibilities, and perfecting already existing realities, this resolutions list might prove to be inspirational for the coming year. My goal is to strive to achieve all or most of the baker’s dozen choices for 2023. This will be a worthy challenge!

I hope Santa treated you well and I pray you all have a healthy happy peaceful 2023 filed with positive angling adventures! CB remaining!
1.) Take up a new form of fishing. In my case I’m going to build a Tenkara rod (long fly rods that originated in Japan), and use it on the upstate New York trout streams. You might also investigate using ultra-lite rods and reels, or try center-pinning for salmon during the fall spawning runs.
How to Choose The Best Tenkara Rod - A Comprehensive Guide

tenkarausa.com
2.) Take at least one child fishing. 2022 JCAA fisherman of the year, Wayne Geider, has taken hundreds of kids yearly to fish the ocean, rivers and lakes accessible to other HRFA volunteers who have helped him with our Youth Anglers programs. This is so rewarding to see beginners catch their first fish!

3.) Take a Vet or Wounded Warrior fishing. I will be working on getting Vets out to fish on my pontoon boat on Lake Ontario. This was a huge success prior to all the Covid crap we’ve dealt with for a couple of years. Those who served often find discovering fishing becomes their favorite new outdoor activity.

4) Build your own lure or tie your own flies. If you like to whittle or own a Dremell tool kit there is nothing to stop you from creating wood and cork lures like poppers, minnows etc. A fly tier does not have to be another Lee Wulff to catch fish. This scribe’s ugly purple nurple flies are all over the country and have personally caught me thousands of salmonids!

5) Treat yourself to the newest lures. Use those gift cards you accrued over the holidays to invest in a potential trophy catch return.

6) Go to the winter outdoor shows. These are the best places to find those newest lures suggested above plus chances to book trips, attend seminars and enjoy getting rid of your “cabin fever”.

7.) Travel to new destinations for awesome
angling adventures. If you saved up or hit the lottery, distant places like Costa Rica
or the Caribbean can be dreams come true. If inflation and budget are obstacles why not find a new lake, pond stream or shoreline that you’ve never fished before.

8.) Get more involved in HRFA activities. Show up at meetings, attend dinners, volunteer for Hooked on the Hudson, write an article for River Views, support the Youth Anglers and scholarship funds etc.

9) Maintain your gear. Arrange your tackle boxes so you can find lures in the dark. Wipe down rods and guides with WD40 rag to remove salt, and crud.

10) Change the “antique slinky” line on those reels! You know the mono is shot when it spools off the arbor in stiff coils with all the elasticity of a chopstick. Have one spool of new fluorocarbon invisible line and another with the Power Pro\Spider Wire line installed. Match the line test with the spool size and your fishing needs.

11) When you purchase new gear buy the highest quality you can afford. Cheap gear from rods and reels to line ad terminal tackle will cost you fish and more likely large trophies when they fail with a higher frequency.

12) Go equipped to fish in comfort. From boots to rain gear to gloves, to sunglasses, to quality SPF sun ray protection, you should strive to be out in the elements with the best items you can afford.

13) Make your vehicle more “fishing friendly”. Invest in a new roof rack, bump step, internal rod holder, or mud flaps etc. Be sure you vehicle is in top operating condition so there are no breakdowns due to your own negligence from lack of maintenance.

What is HRFA Free Money? Are you a paid member.?
At every HRFA in person meeting, half of the HRFA portion of the 50/50 money goes into a virtual jar. At the end of the meeting, a paid HRFA members name is picked (from a jar of all paid HRFA members) to receive the money. The name is announced three times. If the HRFA paid member is not present, the money goes back into the jar for the next months meeting. The process continues and is repeated at the next HRFA meeting.
HRFA Membership Information. If you dont have a 2022 or lifetime member card you are losing out on great HRFA member benifits.
Pay your dues. Get your 2023 membership card.
The generous grace period ended for renewals on March 31st. Those not renewed are on the stale list and are removed from the membership rolls. Note , If you do not have a 2023 or life time membership card , you are not a HRFA member.
For those people who join(ed) the HRFA in October (or later) of a given year, their new or renewal membership also is covered for the following new year. There is also a generous grace period (3 months) for those who are unable to update their membership in January, however paying your dues late puts a strain on the records maintenance and consequently the ability of the executive board’s planning of activities and events.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or want to help (time, skills, or financially) on any particular club projects or events, feel free to email me, Arnie Ulrich (kavester@aol.com) or call me at 1-201-304-4691.

Spectrum for Living Fishing Dock
Dan Harrison proposed, and the Board approved, a $2,500 contribution to kick-start a special project to build a fishing dock in the Oradell Reservoir across the street from “Spectrum for Living” located in Closter, NJ. The long-term benefits will include support for outdoor activities, including fishing, for the residents and local community. To learn more about this wonderful organization click on their logo.
Artist's rendition for promotional fund-raising purposes. Obviously, the actual dock will be built to meet existing codes.
Various sites for entry of machinery etc. needed to build the dock were examined by Board members and contractors back in November. The ray of sunshine hints that God must be smiling on this location and approves of the project to do good for others.

The Pride of the HRFA
Project to Save our Historical Heritage
Due to the restrictions imposed on our lives by the COVID 19 pandemic our plans are on hold. We hope and pray that one day volunteers may start working to refurbish Riverkeeper to her former days of glory when she was the world's first and only riverkeeper vessel. To offer your time and talents contact Dan Harrison at dharrison@cdtresources.com.
2022 Fishing Contest Leader Boards
as of June 27th
(only listing 1st, 2nd & 3rd place)
The HRFA hosts an annual fishing contest which runs from January through December and is open to all HRFA members. You have 30 days from the day you catch a fish to send in your entries. So, the deadline for submissions is January. As a member of the HRFA you and your immediate family are eligible to enter fish in any of our categories. Various divisions are available for prizes presented at our Annual Awards Dinner in March of the following year. Website updated daily. River Views newsletter updates below are done around the first the month. * indicates a new club record.

To be posted on Instagram, photos of your catch should be emailed or texted to Alex Spindelman: (845) 548-0003, a.spindelman@gmail.com
