RIVERTON CITY ANNOUNCES PROJECT TO INCREASE WATER SUPPLY AND KEEP WATER RATES LOW

Riverton City has announced a project aimed at increasing the city’s culinary water supply that will limit future culinary water cost increases. The project will install a reverse osmosis purification plant on the city’s Green Well to improve the quality of water, so it meets or exceeds that of the culinary water provided to the city by Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District (JVWCD). The water produced at the well, and treated in the reverse osmosis plant, will then be used to supplement the city’s primary culinary water supply that is purchased wholesale from JVWCD.

FREE ONLINE EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRAINING

Riverton residents have an opportunity to receive Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training via an online course. The online training is FREE and concludes with an in-person course review and disaster simulation. Some of the material taught includes disaster preparedness and safety, rapid disaster first aid and medical operations, fire suppression light search and rescue operations and victim psychology. In addition to English, the course is also available in Spanish and Mandarin.

Online CERT Training provides the standardized 2020 FEMA curriculum and meets the lecture portion of the CERT training requirements. The program consists of approximately 12 hours online with an additional 16 hours of in-person training, though you are encouraged to plan for longer in case any adjustments need to be made. Those 16 hours in-person are broken into two 8-hour days with built-in breaks and lunches.

The online course includes interactive knowledge checks, live IT and video content, as well as virtual reality simulations that replicate real-world scenarios you could face during an emergency.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED FLIPPING YOUR STRIP?

Park strips are a large water waster in residential landscapes because they are hot, narrow and rarely watered effectively. With that in mind, the state of Utah has introduced a program to help conserve water and pay residents for doing so. The Flip Your Strip program is estimated to save thousands of gallons of water each year for every home that removes grass from its park strip. In return, homeowners can receive up to $1.25 per square foot for replacing the lawn in the park strip with alternative landscaping that doesn’t require much water.

To qualify for the program, the grass in your park strip currently needs to be well-maintained and can’t be dead. The applicant also needs to be in good standing with a participating water provider with no unpaid water bills.

To get the process started, participants can log in to utahwatersavers.com to apply for the program. As part of the application, you will be asked to provide photos of your project site with estimated measurements. Before completing your park strip conversion, you will need to attend a park strip class. You can register for that class by visiting localscapes.com/classes. Once you have completed the project, submit completion photos online and request a post-conversion site visit. You will receive your money following the site visit.

911 Calls

If you ever need to call 911, please stay on the line if you don't get an answer right away. The Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC) occasionally has many calls come in at once and it takes a little time before all can be answered. If you hang up, your call will go to the back of the phone queue, which may delay emergency response.

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

A brand-new nationwide resource is available for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or other mental health crisis. Similar to dialing 911 for emergency response, dialing 988 will connect callers 24/7 to trained crisis counselors who can provide support and resources to those in distress. Please note the number and don’t hesitate to call, or text, should you ever experience a mental health crisis.

Secondary Water Shut Off

Riverton City staff have been notified by local canal companies that canal water will likely be shut off in mid-September. If this takes place, the city's pressurized irrigation (secondary water) will have to shut down about a month earlier than normal because there will be no water source for the system. Please prepare and plan accordingly for this early shut off. More details will be communicated when available.
