AVOID OVERWATERING BY CHECKING SPRINKLERS AND USING THE WEEKLY LAWN WATERING GUIDE
|
We were able to experience rain this past week, but the current drought continues to impact our state. Over 60% of residential water is used for outdoor irrigation. Eliminating just one watering for .17 acres of green space can save approximately 3,000 gallons of water. When storms are in the forecast, it is recommended you adjust how many times your lawn is to be watered that week.
Each watering should apply roughly one-half inch of water. If you are unsure how long your stations should run to apply one-half inch, you can get a Water Check or do one yourself.
The application rate of a sprinkler system depends on the pressure, spacing and distribution of water. For general ranges of typical run times based on precipitation rate, click on the button below.
Riverton City recommends all residents view the Weekly Lawn Watering Guide published by the Utah Division of Water Resources on weekly basis.

WATER STORAGE IS ESSENTIAL TO EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
|
Your body is 60 to 70 percent water. It’s vital to our survival as we can only last three to four days without it. Because of our need for it, it is important to store at least one gallon of water per person per day in preparation for an emergency, though more may be necessary. It is encouraged that you store a minimum two-week supply (14 gallons each) for you and your family in clean, airtight containers. Put these containers in cool, dark and dry places of your home and check on them once a year to ensure there are no leaks or contamination. Doing this can keep your water drinkable for over five years!
However, clean water may not always be accessible to you in an emergency. If you find yourself in this situation, there are ways you can treat most water and make it safe for drinking, cooking and first aid by pre-filtering, filtering, or purifying the unclean water.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESS
|
The World Health Organization has reported that mosquitoes are one of the deadliest animals on Earth because of the diseases they spread. Fortunately, mosquito-borne diseases are less prevalent in the Salt Lake Valley, but they do still exist. West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in Utah, but many who are infected never experience symptoms. Those who do become symptomatic experience fever and other flu-like symptoms. West Nile virus can be fatal, but those cases tend to be rare.
Mosquito species capable of spreading the West Nile virus can be found throughout Utah. In recent years, a vast majority of virus cases were contracted from late July through August, though other cases were reported as early as June and as late as September. There is not currently a vaccine to protect humans against the West Nile virus, but you can decrease the risk of infection by applying mosquito repellents, covering skin when outdoors and avoiding outdoor activities from dusk to dawn.
