A Note From Dr. Compton
Dear Lions,

It's been a busy and eventful week at Riverwalk Academy. Weeks like this past week are beginning to become the norm for our staff, students, and parents.

Here are a few highlights that I'd like to share:
  • Varsity Track - our varsity track team (7th - 9th grade) had their first meet (preseason) of the year and of the school's history. Shout out to our coaches, athletes, their peers, and parents who braved the cold rain on Saturday to watch their athlete/friend/child run for the first time.
  • Black History Month - In addition to author, Daphnie Glenn, visiting our students have learned so much this much about the contributions of many African Americans. Our halls are filled with many African American-inspired art, murals, and collages. To close out last week, our K - 5th grade students made a Black History Museum where each group highlighted important events and people from each decade.
  • Spirit Night - the PTO has been hard at work this year and one of the things I greatly appreciate about their efforts is how they find ways each month to integrate Riverwalk Academy into our Community. This past Tuesday was Spirit Night at Empire Pizza in Newport. The turnout was great and I'm hoping to see each of you at the next spirit event: Sunday at Kate's Skate (see below).
  • Marathon Kids - our elementary school running program is still full steam ahead. It's hard to believe that collectively, they've run over 4,000 miles this school year alone.
  • Meetings for Future Events - this past week, many groups met for future planning. Here's just a few:
  • Come See Me Healthy Kids Zone/Parade Planning Committee
  • Middle School Dance Committee
  • Library Project Committee
  • Calendar Committee
  • PTO Planning (gearing up for their March 4th general meeting and spending time decorating our hallways)
  • Instruction/Data Meetings

Lions, the energy and buzz surrounding Riverwalk Academy is exciting. I couldn't be more proud of what's going on. We have some awesome students, talented teachers, and supportive families. This trifecta is the perfect combination for excitement and success. Thank you all for being a part of our Pride.

Speaking of excitement surrounding Riverwalk Academy, if you tune to WRHI (100.1 FM) Monday at 7:40am, you'll hear our very own 7th grader, Jazzy Sepulveda, talk with Lucas McFadden about being named SC's Middle School Prudential Spirit of the Community Award winner.

Have a wonderful week, Lions!

Sincerely,
Robert Compton, Ph.D.

Calling All Elementary School Students - Do You Have An Idea to Improve Riverwalk Academy's Outside Space?
We have some exciting news to share and this announcement is coming from Vincent Davis, 9th grade. Vincent has been working on an independent project on how to improve our outdoor space, while giving our students voice and choice in the project. His solution was to create a request for proposals where students can submit their ideas. Here's Vincent's announcement:

Hello Riverwalk families. Earlier this year we worked with Boosterthon to raise money for a project at the school. In total we made about $12,000. As the end of the year is approaching quickly, it's time to put these funds to use. The idea came up that the students of Riverwalk Academy could use their creativity to help come up with a project to help benefit the school. With the help of the students of Riverwalk, we are hoping to create something truly special and unique. Click here to view our request for proposal . The deadline to submit an idea is March 8th. If you have any questions, submit them here . Good luck students, we can't wait to see what you come up with.
